After an illustrious college career playing with the Baylor University football team – Baylor Bears, American football quarterback, Robert Griffin III was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 1st round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Robert Lee Griffin III was born on February 12, 1990, in Japan. His mother Jacqueline (née Ross) and father Robert Jr. both served in the United States Army and were stationed in the United States Military Base located in Okinawa, Japan. Upon their return to the US, the family moved around several military bases before they eventually settled in Copperas Cove, Texas.

During his high school days at Copperas Cove High School, Robert Griffin was a three-sport athlete as he played basketball, football, and track. The multi-talented youngster put up top-notch performances in football and track and thus, he was the toast of many college recruiters. Griffin eventually settled for Baylor University and he joined the school in 2008. He continued in his top form both on and off the field and received the Big 12 Conference Offensive Freshman of the Year award. He equally made history as the first player from Baylor University to win the Heisman Trophy. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.

Career Stats

As predicted by many watchers, Robert Griffin III was selected in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft as the 2nd overall pick by the Washington Redskins. He signed a four-year deal with the club in July 2012. On his official NFL debut on September 9, Griffin completed 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards and 2 touchdowns while adding 10 carries for 42 rushing yards in the Redskins’ 40–32 triumph over the New Orleans Saints. This epic performance earned him the NFC Offensive Player of the Week as well as the NFL Rookie of the Week honors.

Robert Griffin III also made history as the first NFL Rookie to pass more than 200 yards, with 4 touchdowns and rush for more than 75 yards in one game, a feat he achieved during the Redskins’ November 14 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. Though his rookie season was thwarted by an injury, Griffin still finished as the rookie quarterback with the highest passer rating (102.4) and the highest touchdown to interception ratio (4:1). He was named to feature in the 2013 Pro Bowl which he eventually missed due to injuries.

His injury woes continued throughout the preseaon and into the 2013 season. He finished the season with 3,203 passing yards, 16 passing touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He also rushed 489 yards with 1 touchdown. In his final (2014) season with the Redskins, Griffin started 9 games in which he completed 147-of-214 passes for 1,694 yards, 4 passing touchdowns and 6 interceptions to go along with 176 rushing yards and 1 rushing touchdown. He did not feature in any game during the 2015 season and was released from the club after his rookie contract expired in March 2016.

Robert Griffin III joined the Cleveland Browns on March 24, 2016 and was named as the starting quarterback of the team for the 2016 season. However, he incurred a shoulder injury at the beginning of the season which had him sidelined for most part of the season. He started only 5 games in which he completed 87-of-147 passes for 886 yards and 2 touchdowns with 3 interceptions. He also had 190 rushing yards with 2 rushing touchdowns. Griffin was released by the Browns in March 2017 and he spent the entire 2017 season as a free agent. He joined the Baltimore Ravens on a 1-year deal in April 2018.
