It was as Ronald Eugene Rivera that he was born on January 7, 1962, in Fort Ord, California. He was brought up in different places as his father, Eugenio Rivera was a military officer, hence, he had to keep moving from place to place as he was posted.

For his education, he spent his early days in different places including Germany, Panama, and the United States. Nonetheless, the family would later settle in California where he would attend and graduate from the Seaside High School. By the time he was through, his talent had helped him to secure a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley.

As regards his ethnicity, he is of Puerto Rican descent even as he is an American by nationality. He was brought up alongside 3 other brothers. There was also his brother, Mickey, who he lost to cancer in 2015.

Having made a very successful college football career, he got selected in 1984 by the Chicago Bears in the year’s NFL draft. He would hold the position until he was off to the San Diego Chargers where he worked as the linebackers coach in 2008, and defensive coordinator from 2008 to 2010.

Carolina Panthers was the next place that would be his base from 2011 when he was made the head coach of the team. Even though he is yet to win the Super Bowl, he has led them to the finals in 2016. More so, he has won a number of personal accolades including the AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2015, as well as the PFWA NFL Coach of the Year in the same period.
