In the past decade, there are very few people who have been able to have their influence in the art of comedy spread right across the globe like the famous “Mr Bean”. The Brit has a way to connect with his audience not exclusively with words but down to gestures and actions. With a seemingly never changing suit and an extremely nice smile, Rowan Atkinson has captivated the world with his humorous charm.

A mere glance at his face sends even the most serious of personalities into hysterics. Born on the 5th of January 1955, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, it is interesting to note that this revered British humour merchant holds two degrees in Electrical Engineering. It was while at Oxford that he began performing, first appearing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

In 1979, Rowan wrote and starred in the BBC’s Not the Nine O’clock News. Over an impressive career spanning over three decades, Atkinson has featured in theatrical productions like The Nerd and The Sneeze.

He has also appeared on TV Shows such as Not the Nine O’Clock News, Blackadder, The Thin Blue Line and the greatest of them all Mr Bean.

As is common with men and women in the spotlight, there seems to be an unending appetite for news, whether good or bad. This has been exasperated by the “click bait” internet world.

So in July 2017, there were rumours on Facebook, Twitter and in the United Kingdom that Rowan had died in a stunt performance in a car in Los Angeles. The news went as far as being carried by FOX News but it was later discovered that the rumour was indeed false. Subsequently, it was uncovered that the story wasn’t only false but also, a potential hoax by scammers to plant viruses and probably extract information from their victims.

Family, Wife and Daughter

Rowan Atkinson was born in Consett, County Durham, England, on 6 January 1955. He is the youngest of four brothers born to Eric Atkinson and Ella May. His older brothers include Paul, who passed away as an infant, a Eurosceptic economist in Rodney who also lost narrowly an election in 2000 and Rupert. The Atkinsons were brought up Anglican and Rowan was educated at Durham Choristers School, a prep school.

Rowan Atkinson in the late 80’s met Sunetra Sastra while she was still a makeup artist for the BBC. The couple wedded in February 1990. The marriage between Sunetra and Rowan went on to produce two kids – Ben Atkinson and Lily Sastra. Their union came to an end in 2014 after some 24 years together with the divorce finalized in 2015.

It is known that Rowan Atkinson was in a relationship with Louise Ford from 2014 and, that he went on to be a father at the age of 62 when it was announced that he and Louise were expecting a child in December 2017.

As expected of most divorces, bad blood and strife usually crop up, so when Lily Atkinson now Lily Sastra decided to ditch her father’s name for her mother’s maiden name, it sent tongues wagging, as there seemed to be a fall out between father and daughter. Lily also took a break from social media for a while leaving some 45,000 followers in the lurch.

She deleted her posts from the image sharing website Instagram. The act was regarded as an attempt to erase her father from her profile. Attempts to get a response from Atkinson’s representative has been futile. Likewise, Lily’s manager also has nothing to say apart from insisting that it is ridiculous to nurse the idea that Rowan and Lily have fallen out.

A devout car enthusiast and collector of vintage cars, Rowan holds a category C+E lorry driving license and has race cars including a Renault 5 GT Turbo. He also owns a rare McLaren F1 and an Aston Martin V8 Zagato which he crashed in 2001 at an enthusiasts’ meeting.
