Sophia Loren Bio (Age)

Sophia Loren was born out of wedlock to Romilda Villani and Riccardo Scicolone on the 20th of September 1934 in the Clinica Regina Margherita in Rome, Italy. At birth, she was named Sofia Villani Scicolone. Her father who was a construction engineer abandoned her mom leaving her to solely cater for young Sophia. Sophia hated her father all through her early life for abandoning them but forgave him on his deathbed.

Sophia’s mom was an aspiring actress and piano teacher. Post second world war, Sophia at the age of 16 began entering beauty pageant competitions. This path would lead her to start an acting career in 1951, aged 17. Beginning with uncredited extra parts, Loren slowly developed and began landing minor roles.

Her carer took a turn for the better when she encountered filmmaker Carlo Ponti whom she would later marry. Ponti revamped her image including her name, changing it from Sofia Lazzaro to Sophia Loren, taking a cue from the Swedish actress Märta Torén. Sophia Loren then got her first starring role in Aida (1953) which was met with rave reviews.

Loren quickly advanced in her career and by late 50s, she began starring in Hollywood films which helped her reach a wider audience. She got to act with big names like Paul Newman, Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant and more. Loren’s ravishing beauty helped in steering a lot of direction her way.

She became less active in the 1970s after birthing her kids. Her works from that period included; The Voyage and A Special Day. Sophia’s later works would come to include Prêt-à-Porter (1994), Nine (2009), My House Is Full of Mirrors, based on her sister Maria’s autobiography, and many more.

Sophia Loren has made solid contributions to theater and film and has received many honorary awards including the 1991 lifetime achievement award.
