Biography

Stone Phillips was born as Stone Stockton Phillips in Texas, in the United States on December 2, 1954. His father Victor Phillips is a chemical engineer while his mother Grace Phillips worked as a school teacher. He is of Scottish ethnic origin and holds American nationality.

While he was growing up, Phillips attended Parkway West High School located in Ballwin, Missouri and he emerged as an above average student. After his graduation, he enrolled at Yale University where he studied Philosophy. He played football during his high school days and was the starting quarterback for his school football team. Philips was also a part of the Yale University team called Yale Bulldogs squad that became champions in the Ivy League Football Competition held in 1976. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1977 and was also honored with F. Gordon Brown Award for outstanding academic and athletic leadership.

Professional Career

After his graduation, Philips relocated to Atlanta, Georgia where he kicked off his career. First, he worked as a remedial reading and mathematics teacher at a Juvenile Detention Centre in Fulton County. Later on, he started working as a correspondent for a local NBC affiliate named WXIA-TV and after two years of working with them, Phillips was hired by ABC News as an assignment editor for their news bureau in Washington D.C. He gradually climbed the ladder of journalism and has covered stories in different parts of the world including the Lebanese war as well as the exodus of Vietnamese boat people.

Subsequently, he was given a regular role as a contributor to the ABC News magazine 20/20, he also appeared on shows like Good Morning America and World News Sunday.

However, he left ABC in 1992, bringing his 12-year-old stint to an end. After his departure, he joined NBC News where he started working as a co-host with Jane Pauley on the NBC show titled Dateline NBC. Later on, he anchored several shows including Weekend Magazine with Stone Phillips. He conducted countless interviews involving notable people such as Lynndie England, Jeffrey Dahmer, Boris Yeltsin, Benard Goetz among others. Later, he won an Emmy Award for an Outstanding interview following his excellent performances. He appeared as a guest on October 17, 2005, episode as well as 2014 final episode of show titled The Colbert Report.

The talented television anchor continued to soar high in his journalism career and in July 2007, his long career with NBC abruptly came to an end as a result of non-renewal of his $7 million contract deal by NBC. After his departure, Phillips became a contributing reporter for PBS NewsHour in 2012 and he also presented a report on The Golf Channel, the reports were centered on golf water usage. Stone Phillips also began a documentary series titled Moving with Grace which airs on PBS Stations since 2013.
