Nirmal had a distinguished 16-year military career; before mountaineering, he served as a Nepalese Gurkha with the British Armed Forces. 38-year-old Purja was a member of the Special Boat Service, the special force unit of the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy. He has now gone on to become a legendary climber, with an ever-growing list of record-breaking summits and numerous high-altitude rescue missions under his belt. He is the only person in the world to summit all the 8000ft mountains in under 14 months.
