The Israeli-American basketball prodigy Sue Bird is among the stars making waves in the Women’s National Basketball Association. Sue Bird – Bio

She was born as Suzanne Brigit Bird in Syosset, New York on October 16, 1980. Sue’s father is an Italian-born Russian Jew and she has an older sister whose name is Jen. She belongs to a multi-racial ethnic origin and holds an Israeli as well as American citizenship. Inspired by her older sister who is into athletics, Sue picked an interest in sports from a very tender age. She started playing basketball when she was eleven and participated in several competitions including the Amateur Athletic Union competitions as well as St John’s Basketball game.

She attended Syosset High School where she continued her high school basketball career. After completing her rookie and sophomore years, Sue transferred to Christ the King Regional High School located in Queens, New York. She finished her high school career winning the New York championship and the national championship. She was also named to WNBA All-American team.

Sue also played for the Huskies of the University of Connecticut during her college career. She led the Huskies to win two National Championships and was honored with Nancy Lieberman Award. She finished her college career scoring 1,378 points, 585 assists, and 23 steals.

Professional Career and Stats

Upon graduation from the University of Connecticut, Sue Bird was the first overall pick by the Seattle Storm in the WNBA draft of 2002. Playing alongside Lauren Jackson, Sue finished her rookie season averaging 14.4 points in 32 game plays. She was named All-WNBA First Team and also became runner-up for the Rookie of the Year Award.

Sue alongside Betty Lennox and Lauren Jackson led the Storm to win their first WNBA Championship in 2004. The Storm also won their second WNBA Championship in 2010. During the 2004/05 and 2005/06 off-season, Sue played for Dynamo Moscow and helped the team reach the finals of the Russian Championship. The 2006/07 off-season was memorable for Sue as she led the Spartak Moscow Region to win the Russian Super League as well as the Euro League Championships. She also won three consecutive championships with UMMC Ekaterinburg of the Russian League.

During the 2012 season, Sue developed a knee injury which led to a surgery, thus keeping her away from playing in the 2013 season. She returned in 2014 and was featured in 33 games; Sue finished the season averaging 10.6 points per game and was named WNBA All-Star. During the 2016 season, she extended her contract with the Storm with a multi-year deal including free agency. She was able to put up a remarkable performance in the season, averaging 12.8 points and 5.8 assists per game. She was also named All-WNBA First Team. The next season, she became the player with the most All-Star appearances, as well as, WNBA leader in assists with a career total of 2,600 assists.

Furthermore, Sue is also a four-time Olympic gold medalist with the United States National Team. She has led the team to win three gold medals and a bronze at the FIBA World Championship.
