Sully Erna is best known for his staggering vocal range and as one of the music industry’s major influences in the development of several genres such as Alternative metal, nu metal, heavy metal, post-grunge, and hard rock. The music maestro started benefitting from the music industry in 1986 and since then he has grown to become a force to reckon with among his peers.

Erna developed a penchant for music at the age of three when he started showing interest in drums. As a little boy, he used to watch his father play the trumpet in their home. As years passed, the singer took to music and later had his big break in 1993 when he landed his debut record deal with the band, Strip Mind. Not long after, Erna left the band after it broke up and formed the Godsmack in 1995.

The Godsmack vocalist was born to his parents Salvatore Erna and Connie Erna as Salvatore Paul Erna Jr. on February 7, 1968, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, in the United States. His family has an extensive background in music as his dad was a prominent trumpet player while his great-uncle was a famous music composer in Sicily, an autonomous island in the Italian region. Every year, the island honors Sully’s great-uncle by playing his music and hanging his pictures in museums.

The musician has two siblings whose names are Carlo Erna and Maria Erna. While the former is his brother, the latter is his older sister. The two have been very supportive of their brother’s career right from day one.

At the age eleven, Sully decided to stop playing music from the sheet and rehearsing with his instructors. This was after he discovered that listening to songs and playing them was easier than reading and playing what is on the sheet. Immediately after he stopped taking his music lessons, Sully began practicing at home, scoring songs by several rock bands such as Rush, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and Motörhead.

As a multi-instrumentalist, he has been featured at several live shows and albums. In December 2006, he was ranked by Hit Parader Magazine as 47th on the list of Top 100 Heavy Metal Vocalists Of All Time. Outside the music stage, he has performed exceptionally well on the screen too, having appeared in a slew of television series, films, documentaries, his band’s live performance, and home videos. His most recent work is The Manor, wherein he was cast as Brett Bayton.

Together with his bandmates, Sully Erna has produced the following musical records Godsmack (1998), Awake (2000), Faceless (2003), The Other Side (2004), IV (2006), Good Times, Bad Times… Ten Years of Godsmack (2007), The Oracle (2010), Live and Inspired (2012), 1000hp (2014), and When Legends Rise (2018).

Despite his busy schedule and heavy touring, the singer also finds time to record his personal tracks and albums. So far, he has written and recorded three solo albums. He released his debut album titled: Avalon in 2010 while the remaining two (Avalon Live and Hometown Life) were released in 2012 and 2016 respectively. Sully Erna also has his personal memoir which chronicles his life and career with Godsmack band. The memoir, titled: The Paths We Choose, was released in 2007.
