Tom Selleck is a veteran Hollywood actor and producer popular for his role as Thomas Magnum in the 1980 series Magnum P.I. If there’s nothing else by which you can point him out, his signature mustache should do the magic.
The actor and producer was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 29, 1945, as Thomas William Selleck to Robert Dean Selleck and Martha Selleck. His father was in the real estate business while his mother was a housewife. The actor is of German and English ancestry and has a sister Martha and two brothers Robert and Daniel who are both real estate developers. Selleck attended Grant High School and upon graduation, in 1962 he was admitted into the University of Southern California on a basketball scholarship to study Business Administration. During his college days, he used to be a model before his drama coach suggested he starts acting and prompted him to take up acting lessons at the Beverly Hills Playhouse.

The 6ft 4inches gallant actor known for his mustache trademark and hairy chest started his career with numerous minor roles in TV series like The Movie Murderer (1970), Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law (1973), Charlie’s Angels (1976) and The Sacketts (1979). After years of hard work in the film industry, the actor’s big break came in 1980 when he was cast as Thomas Magnum, a private detective in the TV series Magnum P.I. The movie was a huge success on the CBS network on which it aired from 1980 to 1988 and he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. This achievement launched his acting career and landed him a role in another blockbuster, the comedy movie Three Men and a Baby(1987) in which he starred alongside Steve Guttenberg and Ted Danson.
The actor’s other outstanding performances include his character as Dr. Richard Burke in the TV series Friends from 1996 to 2000. This landed him a nomination on Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. His next comedy work was the romantic comedy In & Out which also featured actors like Kevin Kline, Joan Cusack and Matt Dillon. He was also featured in the TV series The Closer (1998) in which he starred as a rich advertising agency executive and from 2007 to 2008 he was in the popular TV series Las Vegas where he starred as A.J Cooper.
In 2007, the actor and actress Kathy Baker featured in the television film Jesse Stone: Sea Change which was a detective movie about a police superintendent who is faced with solving a murder case. As at 2010, he signed a contract for another big hit TV series Blue Blood a film about the realities faced by the families of police officers with the New York City Police Department in which he plays the role of Frank Reagan.
The talented Tom Selleck has a long list of awards to show for his stay in the Hollywood film industry for over two decades. These awards date as far back as the 1980’s when he won two Gloden Apple Awards for Male Star of the year, an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, two People’s Choice Award as Favorite Male TV Performer and Favorite All-Round Male Entertainer and one Gloden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV-Series-Drama.
The actor and producer has a well-deserved Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame located at 6925 Hollywood Boulevard. He also has an Honorary Doctorate Degree from Pepperdine University in 2000 and was inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers in 2010.
