Toni Braxton is one of the most amazing women in the history of the Black Americans whose voice has been termed a contralto voice. She is a woman filled with passion for her career and is quite ambitious at achieving it. Braxton whose middle name is Michelle was born on October 7, 1967, in Severn, Maryland, US. She started out her quest for excellence by doing music in her church choir. Her love for the craft was nurtured there before she took it to the higher stage of producing albums.

Other than being a singer, Braxton is also a songwriter, producer, actress, television personality and philanthropist; she has been active in all her career positions since 1989 till present. She was first signed by Arista Records alongside her sisters in the 1980s in their amazing family group known as ‘The Braxtons’.

Toni attended Bowie state university where she obtained a teaching degree, however, she decided to take the tunnel leading to music professionally after William E. Pettaway heard her singing while pumping gas and decided to be her producer.

Career

Toni Braxton’s first self-titled debut album was released in 1993 and was a huge success, peaking at number one on the U.S Billboard 200 albums chart. Afterwards, she released her song titled Another Sad Love Song which attained another peak of excellence on the billboard hot 100 and R&b singles charts. Her music albums include Toni Braxton (1993), Secrets (1996), The Heat (2000), Snowflakes (2001), More than a Woman (2002), Libra (2005), Pulse (2010), Love, Marriage & Divorce (with Baby Face, 2014) and Sex & Cigarettes (2018).

Braxton plays the keyboard and was the first female to sign with Laface records. She acted as Belle in the Broadway production of Beauty and the Beast in September 1998. She has won several awards including seven Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards in 1994 and in 1995, nine Billboard Music Awards and seven American Music Awards. She has filed for bankruptcy twice but is currently worth $10 million.

Health Challenges

Braxton’s world was riddled with rumours that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. She denied the claims until it became public in 2008 when she had a benign lump removed from her breast. In 2010 Braxton was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus; a highly life-threatening disease. From the research made, the disease has been historical in her family because her brother is a carrier and her uncle died of its complications.

Toni Braxton was married to in April 2001. The two met at an open tour and kicked off a romance which led them to the altar. Their union was blessed with two boys – the first who they named Denim Cole Braxton Lewis was born in 2001 and the second Diezel Ky Braxton-Lewis was born in 2003.

Her second son Diezel was diagnosed with Autism which motivated his mom to join the Autism speakers where she serves as an international spokesperson. Braxton announced her separation from her husband Keri Lewis in November 2009 and later got officially divorced in July 2013.

Father and Sisters

Toni Braxton was born to her father Michael Cornard Braxton Sr., a clergyman at the Methodist center who also worked with a power company. Her mother is Evelyn Jackson, an opera singer and a cosmetologist who was also a pastor. Ironically, Braxton was born into a spiritual and Christian home because apart from her pastor parents, her maternal grandfather was also a pastor. It has been said that the upbringing Braxton and her siblings received was of the most strict nature as they were never allowed to listen to any kind of music apart from gospel/Godly music.

Braxton has six siblings and she is the eldest of them all. She has a brother Micheal Junior who was born in 1968 and four younger sisters Tarci, Towanda, Trina and Tarma, who were born in 1971, 1973, 1974, and 1977 respectively.

Growing up, Braxton was not alone in her love for music. Along with her four sisters, they began singing in the late 1980s with the stage name The Braxtons, producing their first album Good Life in 1990. The album did not do so well, but it gave Toni Braxton the right amount of exposure. Soon, Producers came looking for her and this led to her recording the soundtrack for  film Boomerang.

In 2016, news emerged that Toni Braxton is in a relationship with rapper, record producer and entrepreneur Birdman whose birth name is Bryan Williams. They have been together since 2016 but finally announced their engagement at the Grammy awards of February 2018.

Birdman is worth over $160 million dollars and is the co-founder of cash money records and one half of the duo Big Tymers. Apart from music, the rapper has also been tagged as a marijuana carrier after being caught with a pound of marijuana in 2007. He entered into oil and gas and formed a company which he named Bronald Oil and Gas, LLC.
