Biography, Age
Toni Kroos was born on January 4, 1990, in Greifswald, East Germany to Birgit Kämmer and Roland Kroos. His mother, Birgit, is a sports biology teacher and former badminton player for Germany, while his father, Roland is a football coach and who also worked as a professional wrestler.
While growing up, Kroos struggled in school to focus all his energy on football. His father gave him a strong work ethic which made him stand out on the pitch. He first joined local club Greifswalder SC before later transferring to Hansa Rostock’s youth team.
By the time he was 16, Kroos made his dream move to Bayern Munich where he joined their youth set up. He was highly rated by the team’s staff and was promoted to Bayern’s senior team just under a year. Meanwhile, due to training requirements, Kroos had already begun to abandon school. His hard work and sacrifice, however, paid off when the now 17-year-old made his debut for the Bavarians in the 2007-08 season on the 26th of September. Within 18 minutes of his substitute appearance, Kroos twice assisted Miroslav Klose in the 5-0 thrashing of opponents Energie Cottbus.
His UEFA Cup debut was also a memorable one as Kroos, who again appeared as a substitute against Red Star Belgrade, first provided an assist for Klose before scoring the winning goal in stoppage time. He went on to make a total of 20 appearances for the club that season.
Toni Kroos had a slow start to the following season. On the last day of the January transfer window, he was sent out on loan to Bayer Leverkusen for 18 months to gain the much needed first team game experience. Kroos managed to establish himself as a first-team regular with Leverkusen, making a total of 48 appearances for the team and scoring 10 goals along the way.
Kroos returned to Munich in 2010 and forged a strong midfield partnership with compatriot Bastian Schweinsteiger. He played a major role in the 2012-13 season when Bayern won a treble that included the Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League, and the DFB-Pokal. He kept up his performances the following season, prompting Real Madrid to make a move for him.
In July 2014, Real Madrid signed Kroos for an undisclosed fee speculated to be around €30 million. He went on to build a formidable midfield partnership with Croatian Luka Modric. In the 2015-16 season, under the management of Zinedine Zidane, Kroos won his second Champions League trophy, becoming the first ever German player to do so with two different clubs. He continued to feature regularly for the club as they won another Champions League trophy the following season as well as the La Liga title.
