Remember that tight end whose 1-yard touchdown pass to Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback Nick Foles helped them clinch the Super Bowl 2018 victory? Well, the remarkable player is no other than Trey Burton. The American football player plays tight end for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL).
Trey Burton’s Bio
The Bears tight end was born on October 29, 1991, in Venice, Florida where he attended Venice High School. During his high school career, he was an exceptional dual-threat quarterback for the Venice Indians football team and was a first-team all-state selection both in his junior and senior years, accounting for 76 touchdowns in both.
Following his high school graduation, he enrolled at the University of Florida on an athletic scholarship. He would go on to play for the Florida Gators football team from 2010 to 2013 during which he recorded six touchdowns in a single game breaking ‘s team record as a freshman. While in college, Trey though recruited as a quarterback ended up playing several positions including wide receiver, tight end, fullback, and quarterback. His ability to play multiple positions would, however, make it difficult for scouts and analysts to place him in a position he would play professionally.
Through his collegiate career, Trey Burton played 50 career games, recorded 720 rushing yards, 976 receiving yards, and 20 total touchdowns.
At the end of his impressive college football spell, Trey attended the NFL combine along with 21 other collegiate tight ends. Following the combine, he also opted to take part at Florida’s pro day in March 2014. Therein, he lowered his time in the short shuttle and three-cone drill, while also increasing his broad and vertical jumps from the combine. Eventually, he was projected to be a seventh-round pick or a priority undrafted free agent by NFL draft experts and analysts with the latter becoming the case.
The Philadelphia Eagles signed him as an undrafted free agent on May 10, 2014, following the 2014 NFL Draft, to a three-year contract for a signing fee of $1.53 million. He was assigned to jersey number 47 so that he could play in both the tight end and running back positions. He caught nine passes for 100-yards and a touchdown in four preseason games which was followed by the head coach naming him the fourth tight end on the Eagles’ depth chart; the fourth roster was created for him to save the risk of placing him on waivers.
Following his selection, he made his NFL debut in the Eagles’ season-opening game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played primarily on special teams and was named to the NFL-All Rookie team as a special teams player. Though he didn’t catch any passes in his rookie season, he became a bigger part of the team’s offense over the next three years with the Eagles.
Trey secured a spot as the third tight end following the 2015 preseason games where he entered the record as the first Eagles’ player to have two touchdown receptions in a single preseason game since 2012. Having recorded his first career touchdown in the previous season, he went on to the receptions recording his first and finished with two catches for 49-yards in 2015.
In 2016 season, his career took on a new form. With a new coach in position, Trey got on a larger role on the offense. Therein, he earned his first career touchdown reception as well as his first career start, filled in at long snapper position for the injured teammates. At the end of the season, he recorded 37 receptions for 327 receiving yards and a touchdown in four starts and 15 games. On special teams, he played a career-high 233 offensive snaps (29%) and had both a forced fumble and fumble recovery.
Trey Burton was signed to his tender by the Eagles in April 2017 after receiving no offers on a second-round placed on him in March. The Eagles’ tight end opted to change his jersey number to 88 in May 2017. He made his second career touchdown reception in October during a 34-7 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. He caught fewer passes (23) in his final season with the Eagles’ but his five scores were a career high. Then, there was his Super Bowl LII performance.
The Venice native received a great and much-deserved boost in his career during the Super Bowl which pushed him to the national front. He became widely known for throwing a touchdown pass to Nick Foles with only 34 seconds left in the first half. The touchdown pass which helped in landing Eagles the 41-33 Super Bowl win was known as Philly Special.
Having made a mark in the Eagles’ history which will go down well in their lore, Trey moved his tent to camp with Chicago Bears on March 14, 2018, when he signed a four-year, $32 million deal with them.
