As a child, Tyga was motivated to be an artist by listening to rappers like and . While he was born Michael Ray Stevenson, the rapper is better known by his stage name Tyga which stands for Thank You God Always.

Following his stardom, there was a debate about Tyga’s background. Though we were under the impression that he grew up in the low socioeconomic area of Compton, in a leaked footage from the unaired television show Bustas, the rapper claimed he grew up in a “well-to-do” home in the Valley. And did we mention his parents supposedly drove a Range Rover at the time? Again, he also claimed that his popular moniker came from when his mother was calling him Tiger Woods. Notwithstanding, his claims on the show have been dismissed as satirical and not to be taken seriously.

Born in Compton, California, on November 19, 1989, Tyga is an American rapper who has rubbed shoulders with a handful of the creme de la creme in the rap world. The rapper who is of Vietnamese and Jamaican descent lived in Compton until he was about 11, 12 before moving to Gardena, California. His mother’s name is Pasionaye Nguyen and there’s no mention of his father. His passion for the rap genre started at an early stage as he grew up listening to successful artists like Lil Wayne, Cam’ron, Eminem and a slew of others.

How He Began

His journey to fame started out in school where he would enter rap contests with friends and post songs that he made up in online chat rooms. Tyga’s cousin, Travis McCoy who was a member of Gym Class Heroes also played a part in exposing him to the music industry, giving him the opportunity to tour with the group. Nevertheless, he never stopped working on his underground mixtapes which influenced his journey to fame.

Tyga also scored his first record deal through McCoy who shared his music with Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy. Wentz liked his flow as well as his unique voice, thus, signing him to Bat Squad records, part of his Decaydance label. The label produced Tyga’s first album “No Introduction” in 2008. Early in 2007, his debut mixtape “Young on Probation” which was a hit, caught the attention of Young Money Entertainment. He later signed a record deal with the label in 2011. Also, his single “Deuces” from the 2007 mixtape reached the top 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was also nominated for the Grammy Awards.

His second studio album was also a commercial success. The sophomore album Careless World: Rise of the Last King which was released in 2012 boasts singles “Far Away” and “Still Got It” that made it to the Billboard Hot 100.

Tyga also appeared in a porn movie which he produced and co-directed. While he starred in the film dubbed “Rack City: The XXX Movie”, he sadly didn’t play a sex role. The rapper’s third album “Hotel California” released in 2013 featured Rick Ross, 2 Chainz and .

His fourth offering “The Golden Album: 18th Dynasty” released in 2014 was roped in controversy with the rapper accusing his record label, Young Money Entertainment of holding his completed music hostage. Thus, he stated that he was considering leaking the album and on December 4, 2014, Tyga made a tweet, declaring that the album would be released independently. Subsequently, the album dropped on June 23, 2015, for streaming exclusively on Spotify then later on Apple Music.

Following his run-in with his label, Tyga was signed to Kanye West ‘s GOOD Music imprint, under the aegis of Def Jam Recordings in 2016 and on July 21, 2017, he released his fifth studio album, BitchImTheShit2, the sequel to his 2011 mixtape #BitchImTheShit.

Notably, Jenner is the sister-in-law of who signed Tyga to his GOOD Music label in 2016. She’s also a step sister to Robert Kardashian who dated and had a daughter with Blac Chyna after her breakup with Tyga. It’s quite safe to say, their’s is a case of a vicious circle.
