Tyrese Gibson is one of those dudes we can’t help but admire their versatility in the arts; the multi-talented artist no doubts knows his onions when it comes to entertaining people. Gibson kicked off his career as a singer but transitioned into movies appearing in a couple of Hollywood blockbuster films.

He is a rapper, singer/songwriter, screenwriter, film and TV producer, author, model, VJ, and an actor. His popular movie roles include as Joseph Summers (Jody) in John Singleton’s 2001 coming of age movie Baby Boy, as Roman Pearce in the Fast and the Furious series and as Angel Mercer in Four Brothers. He also played in Robert Epps Transformers film series.

Bio

Gibson was born in Watts, Los Angeles, California on the 30th of December 1978 to Priscilla Murray and Tyrone Gibson. Tyrese and his three older siblings grew up in Watts, raised single-handedly by their mother after their father left home and never came back.

Tyrese’s career kicked off in 1994 after he auditioned for a Coca-Cola Ad at the suggestion of his high school teacher. He finally made it on the commercial singing “Always Coca-Cola”. This ad placed him on the spotlight and got him other jobs with Tommy Hilfiger and Guess.

In 1998, he signed on with RCA Records where he released his debut single “Nobody Else”, which in no time peaked at #36 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In September of the same year, Tyrese Gibson dropped his first album which peaked #17 on the Billboard chart. He also landed a job as the new host on a weekday music video show on MTV called MTV Jams, as well as a host and VJ for the same channel.

His second single from the album “Lately” also made it on the Billboard Charts peaking at #56. The album’s third single “Sweet Lady” became the biggest hit on the album peaking #9 on the R&B charts and earning Tyrese Gibson a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Male Vocal Performance. It didn’t stop at that; the album would later be certified Platinum and Gibson along with singers like and RL of Next and Case were featured on “The Best Man I Can Be” which happened to be the soundtrack of The Best Man on the single.

In May 2001, he released his second album entitled “2000 Watts.” The album sold over 500, 000 copies and was certified gold; it also had hit singles like  “I Like Them Girls, and Just a Baby Boy,” which peaked on the Billboard Charts. The single Just a Baby Boy featured and Mr Tan, and would later become the soundtrack to John Singleton’s 2001 coming of age movie Baby Boy, in which Gibson made his debut acting role.

Tyrese Gibson released his third studio album I Wanna Go There under J in 2002 Records after RCA Records disbanded him. His first single from the album “How You Gonna Act Like That” did not only peak at #7 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart but has become his most successful single to date. In December 2006, Tyrese released his fourth studio album entitled “Alter Ego,” which remains his lowest selling album till date.

After his fourth album, Gibson took a break from music to focus on his family and on building an acting career. In 2011, he made a comeback and began working on a new album “Open Invitation” which was eventually released in November of the same year and in one week, it sold 130,000 copies and peaked #9 on the Charts. The album also earned him his third Grammy Award nomination in 2013  for Best R&B Album.

In July 2015,  the musician dropped another album “Black Rose” which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, selling 77,000 copies in its first week; this became Gibson’s first number one album of his career.

Gibson made his debut in acting in 2001 as Joseph Summers (Jody) in John Singleton’s coming of age movie Baby Boy. He later played Roman Pearce in the Fast and the Furious series alongside . Asides singing and acting, Tyrese Gibson has also authored some books. His visit to Comic-Con inspired him to co-create a 3-issue comic book Tyrese Gibson’s MAYHEM! in 2009. He is also the author of two best bestsellers: How to Get Out of Your Own Way, released in 2012 and  Manology: Secrets of Your Man’s Mind Revealed which he co-authored with friend Rev. Run released in 2013.

The actor was married to Norma Mitchell from 2007 to 2009, together, they have a daughter named Shayla who was born in 2007. Norma and Gibson got into a custody battle over their daughter as Tyrese wanted Shayla to live with him in Atlanta rather than with her mother in Los Angeles. Although they both currently share custody of their daughter, Gibson claims he pays $13,000 monthly in child support.

Tyrese remarried in February 2017 and he and his wife Samantha Lee welcomed a daughter on October 1, 2018.

Gibson stands at a height of 1.8m (5ft 9 inches) and weighs 78 kg. His other body measurements like chest, arms, and waist sizes have not been confirmed at the moment.
