Regardless of whether he manages to enjoy more success in the future or not, Nick Kyrgios will go down in history as one of the most successful Australians to ever play the game of tennis. The Aussie ensured his name will forever be mentioned alongside some of his countries greatest players by being having so far won six ATP titles and reaching eight ATP finals. He would also further be noted for having been one of three people to have beaten three of the greatest tennis players of his generation; Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, at the first time of asking.

Growing up in Canberra, Australia, Nick Kyrgios played both basketball and tennis in his formative years. He particularly excelled in the former and was given the chance to represent his nation at competitive games in his early teens.

By the time he turned 14, however, Kyrgios began devoting his time and energy solely to tennis. He recorded his first win as a junior tennis player in 2010 at the ITF junior tour title in Fiji, aged 15. He went on to take part in the junior tour more regularly the following year, becoming the junior world No. 3 player in 2012 after clinching two junior grand slam doubles titles.

Nick Kyrgios’ junior career moved to a higher level the following year when he recorded a victory over South African tennis player Wayne Montgomery in the Traralgon International final and rose to No. 1 in the junior ranking. Having begun 2013 ranked at number 838, Nick Kyrgios’ performances during the year helped him end it with a ranking of 182. The world subsequently took notice of the young Australian as he went into 2014 looking to improve on what he had achieved in the previous year.

In 2014, Kyrgios competed in several competitions, including the 2014 Australian Open, 2014 U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships, 2014 Sarasota Open, 2014 Savannah Challenger, 2014 Aegon Nottingham Challenger, 2014 French Open, and the 2014 Wimbledon Championships among others. Some of the notable tennis stars he beat that year include Benjamin Becker, Daniel Kosakowski, and Rafael Nadal as he went on to end the year with a ranking of 52nd in the world.

In subsequent years, Nick Kyrgios’ career has endured many highs and lows. In 2015, at the Madrid Open, he defeated world number two Roger Federer but did not manage to have a good enough season to break into the top 40 in the rankings at the end of the year. 2016 proved to be a better year for him as he reached a career-high ranking of number 16 that year and won his maiden ATP title at the Open 13 in Marseille. He has further been able to represent his country at a number of Daviss Cup tournaments.

Actions That Has Led Him to Receive Record Fines From the ATP

Over the years, Nick Kyrgios has built a reputation for being a very temperamental player. He has been accused of behaving unsportsmanlike, losing a match or non-vital set purposely (tanking), and verbally abusing opponents, stewards, or spectators. This has resulted in him being heavily and repeatedly fined, as well as suspended and banned, by the governing body of tennis.

One of the very first notable incidents was at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships when Nick was accused of playing below his abilities during his fourth-round loss to Richard Gasquet. He was notably booed by the crowd for this but the athlete denied he failed to try to play. At the 2015 Rogers Cup, he was heard on the microphones insulting opponent Stan Wawrinka and was fined $13,127 and given suspended penalties of $32,818 and a 28-day ban pending further breaches.

The most recent of his actions to have brought him a fine or ban was at the 2019 Cincinnati Masters tournament where the ATP awarded him a record fine of $113,000 for five separate incidents of unsportsmanlike conduct. The incidents included him smashing his racquets, displaying a vulgar gesture and going on an expletive-riddled rant directed at the umpire.

Nick Kyrgios has kept a low profile since the public got to know about his failed relationship with Croatian-Australian tennis player Ajla Tomljanović, who he began dating secretly in the year 2015. Their relationship became public knowledge the following year after they were seen together on several occasions and they shared photos of each other on their social media pages.

Sadly, the two called it quits in 2017 after Nick was seen in a London night club partying with other tennis players. They were said to have rekindled their romance in 2018 but things subsequently fell apart, giving room for Tomljanović to go ahead and enter into a relationship with Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini who she started dating in October 2019.
