Ursula Andress is a Swiss television and film actress who was also a model and a popular sex symbol in her prime. She has appeared in a host of British, American and Italian films and television shows. One of Ursula’s most notable performances was playing the role of Honey Ryder, the Bond girl for the first movie, Dr. No.

She also starred in the James Bond film, Casino Royale where she played the role of Vesper Lynd. Andress’ several other film appearances include roles in The 10th Victim, Perfect Friday, Fun in Acapulco, The Sensuous Nurse, Clash of the Titans, The Southern Sun, and The Blue Max. Born on March 19, 1936, in Ostermundigen, Switzerland, Andress is one of five siblings – four sisters and a brother – of her parents. Her mother, Anna Andress, was a landscaper and her father, Rolf Andress, was a German diplomat. Her father vanished during World War II as he had been expelled from Switzerland previously on political grounds. She grew up in Bern, Switzerland and did her early schooling there. By the time she was 16 years old, she had become fluent in Italian, German and French. She moved to Paris and after a year of studies, she proceeded to live in Rome.

In 1954, while at a party in Rome, Andress met with a film producer who took an interest in her and offered to give her a screen test for a role in an Italian movie. She performed satisfactorily during the test and earned an opportunity to appear in the film, An American in Rome alongside Alberto Sordi. In 1955, she appeared in The Sins of Casanova where she starred alongside Gabriele Ferzetti – who would later co-star with her in a James Bond film. That same year she appeared in La catena dell’odio.

After being convinced by the American producer, Ursula Andress moved to Hollywood to continue her acting career. Soon after she arrived, she went into a seven-year contract with the renowned studio, Paramount Pictures. She, however, did not begin appearing in Hollywood films immediately because she did not speak English. In 1962, she appeared in an episode of La Strega alongside Rey.

In 1962, she got her big break and gained international acclaim for her role as Honey Rider in the James Bond film Dr. No. The scene in the film in which she arose from the Caribbean Sea sporting a white bikini soon became iconic in film and fashion history. That very scene and her overall role in Dr. No opened doors to several opportunities for her in the industry. Her appearance in the film also won her a New Star of Year Golden Globe Award in 1964.
