What Does NCIS Stand For?
NCIS is an acronym which stands for Naval Criminal Investigative Service. NCIS is the primary law enforcement agency in the U.S. Department of the Navy shouldered with the responsibility of investigating all criminal activities involving the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the United States Navy (USN). The NCIS Television Series
NCIS as a television series revolves around a fictional team of special agents initially introduced in CBS’s JAG season eight episodes 20 and 21: “Ice Queen” and “Meltdown.” Thus, NCIS, as we know it today, is a spin-off of JAG (Judge Advocate General) an American legal drama with a U.S Navy theme. NCIS is reportedly the second-longest-running scripted American television series just only behind Law & Order: Special Victims Unit which has been running from 1999 to the present time. It is also the 7th longest-running scripted U.S. primetime television series of all time.
The series prior to its airing was advertised on CBS as ‘Naval CIS’ and when it started, it was named ‘Navy NCIS’. However, “Navy” was later jettisoned after its first season to what we now have today simply as NCIS. The American action police procedural television series has over the years grown to have two spin-off shows from it. They are NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans.
When NCIS began airing on September 23, 2003, it started off following a team of Naval Criminal Investigative Service Major Case Response Team (MCRT) in Washington, D.C field office in Washington Navy Yard. The MCRT comprised of as Leroy Jethro Gibbs – Supervisory Special Agent and his team members: Ziva David (), Caitlin Todd (), Alexandra Quinn (), Anthony DiNozzo (), Nicholas Torres (), Eleanor Bishop () and Timothy McGee ().

NCIS’ real-life headquarters is located in Russell-Knox Building, MCB Quantico, Virginia, with a field office located at the Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling. NCIS television series is, however, filmed far away from Virginia and precisely in Los Angeles. CBS’ choice of California’s divergent landscape is aimed to bring home as much as possible, what is obtainable geographically in northern Virginia and Washington, D.C.
