Cara Buono was born in The Bronx, New York, on the first day of March in the year 1971. She is of Italian ancestry and grew up alongside three siblings; 2 brothers and a sister. She had her high school education at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in Manhattan, New York City and for college, she attended Columbia University where she bagged a degree in English and Political Science.

Buono marked her professional acting debut in the Harvey Fierstein stage play Spook House.
