Danny John-Jules is a professional dancer, singer, and actor who has rocked the screens – both small and big screen – over two decades. Although he began dancing before acting, he is better known for his role as Cat in the British Comedy Series Red Dwarf and as policeman Dwayne Myers in the popular crime series Death in Paradise. 

Learning more about the dancer turned actor, Danny John-Jules was born in the metropolitan town of Paddington, London. Although the identities of his parents are not known, what is known is that his mother worked in the courts and both parents were from Dominica but moved to Britain aboard the HMT Empire Windrush.

The number of siblings he has is not certain, however, he has a brother who is a barrister. Danny grew up in Notting Hill, England and attended Rutherford Comprehensive School from 1972 to 1977, where he learned gymnastics.

Who is Danny John-Jules?

Danny John-Jules is popular for his acting roles but he is also a voice actor, singer, and dancer. Before his television and film days, he was a dancer in a group called “Second Generation”. Among other dance productions, Danny was part of the dancers for the Wham! video for the Edge of the Heaven. In this video, he danced alongside singer George Micheal. He made another dance appearance on the Lena Zararoni TV series in 1981 and made a tribute to her on her website.

In the same year, he played a dancing role in the movie The Great Muppet Caper – he danced along others in the restaurant scene. Most recently, Danny John-Jules made another appearance in a dancing scene when he featured in the 16th series of Strictly Come Dancing with professional dancer Amy Dowden as his partner. By week 5, he had already topped the leaderboard with his jive, scoring 37 points. However, the game came to an end for the duo when they were eliminated in the 8th week, days after allegations were filed against Danny for bullying Amy his partner even to the point of tears.

Acting Career

Danny began acting with his debut role as Frog in the short film Seven Green Bottles. The movie was a commentary that warned of the dangers and consequences of juvenile crimes. He later appeared in the 1986 version of Little Shop of Horrors. Danny John-Jules had a shot at fame in 1988 when he was cast in the inception of the science fiction comedy series Red Dwarf as Cat. It was revealed that he landed the role after going to an audition dressed his father’s old suit. Unaware of his lateness to the audition, he behaved in a less concerned manner and the producers immediately took notice of him and saw him as the most suitable for the role.

After his big role in Red Dwarf, he went on to appear in the children spy series M.I. High. Later he played Barrington in another children series Maid Marian and Her Merry Men. The 1998 movie Lock, Stock, and The Two Smoking Barrels also had the likes of Danny John-Jules, skilfully delivering his role. He also appeared in  (2002). Years later, he starred in British films Blade II, The GrindSucker Punch, The Tournament before clinching a minor role in the 2010 film The WhistleBlower. 

He has had reoccurring roles in the BBC 1 series, Death in Paradise as Police man Dwayne Myers from its inception until 2018. He has also had several appearances in television programmes such as Comedy Connections, Casualty, and Night Fever.

 

Danny John-Jules has made an attempt at a musical career with one single to his credit Tongue Tied which was released in 1993. This single was from the series Red Dwarf and reached the high of the 17th spot in the UK Top 20 charts. He featured his Red Dwarf co-stars and backup singers in the video.

In addition, he has voiced various characters in a few animations such as Chop Sock Chooks, Bob the Builder and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko. Aside from his professional career, Danny is a motorcyclist and is usually involved in charitable rides to promote or aid humanitarian courses.
