The Tennessee native was born on the 12th day of December 1994 to Vanessa and Vencent Bell as Vonn Christian Bell. He attended two high schools; Chattanooga Central High School, Harrison, Tennessee and Ridgeland High School, Rossville, Georgia, and played football in both schools.

At Chatanooga, he received all the district honors and during his senior season at Ridgeland, he led the school team to the Georgia Class AAAA state championship but they, unfortunately, lost to Sandy Creek. He would be ranked the #2 safety in the whole country. Scout.com, Rivals.com and 247 Sports all rated him a 5-star-recruit. ESPN rated him a 4-star recruit, as well as the 50th best player in the country.

He was also selected to play in 2013 Under Armour All-American game, that same year, he committed to The Ohio State University, where he played thirteen games as a freshman. His first career start was, however, in January 2014 in the Discover Orange Bowl, where he also recorded the first interception in his college career.

He became a full-time starter in his sophomore season, recording ninety-one tackles, six interceptions in fifteen games. He played at the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship and recorded 6 tackles and one sack at the game against Oregon which ended in a win.

NFL Career

Bell attended the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana, but skipped the drills due to a hamstring injury he sustained in college with playing. He chose rather to meet with several team representatives and have his weights and measurements taken.

He would later attend the Ohio State’s Pro day and performed both the 40-yard, 20-yard, and 10-yard dashes, including the vertical drills. Vonn Bell also attended private workouts and visited several teams which include the Buffalo Bills, Atlanta Falcons, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, among many others.

He was ranked the 2nd best safety prospect in the draft by both the ESPN and NFL Draft analyst Mike Mayock. DraftScout.com ranked him the 3rd strongest safety, while Sports Illustrated named him the eleventh best defensive back.

Other experts and scouts projected him a second-round pick in the draft and that projection was accurate as the New Orleans Saints would draft him in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. The franchise traded that 3rd round (78th overall) and 4th round (112th overall) selections to the New England Patriots in order to have Voon Bell in the 61st pick in the second round.

He sealed the four-year $3.97 million deal with the franchise on May 10th 2016. The contract came with $1.08 million signing contract. At the training camp, he competed with Jairus Byrd for the starting free safety position and head coach Sean Payton would later name him the backup free safety to start the regular season behind Byrd.

Bell played all sixteen games with the New Orleans as a rookie, starting 13 of them. He was second on the team in tackles and looked like a key piece in the rebuilding of a struggling Saints secondary.

He also led the team in tackles the following season (2017) and became a huge part of the team’s defensive improvement fitting perfectly well into coach Allen’s aggressive philosophy. Voon was also the second on the team with 4.5 sacks.

Vonn Bell appeared in sixteen games in his second season with the Saints, starting ten of those games. He ended the season with eighty-three combined tackles (62 solos), 2 passes and 4.5 sacks.

He was named 65th of the best safeties in 2017 by the Pro Football Focus with an overall grade of 68.7.
