Why Danny Pino Left SVU?

Pino’s bromance with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU) which started in 2011 (in the 13th season of the show) ended in the 16th season after being a regular for three solid seasons of the show. His exit is coming to fans of the show as a shock and they are left wondering why he is leaving the show at a point where he was becoming a focal point in the series.

In the series, he announces his exit to his partner and friend, Olivia Benson () when he attends the celebration of the successful adoption of her baby, Noah Porter Benson. It begins at the trial of sex trafficker Johnny D. as gunshots are fired in the courtroom by the criminal who snatches a weapon from an officer and shoots the judge. Amaro moves to stop Johnny D from shooting more people and ends up getting shot in the liver and on the knee.

After spending about two weeks at the hospital recuperating from the surgery, the next time he is seen is at Benson’s house during the celebrations. The reason he tells Benson is necessitating his retiring from the police department is that his ceilings over him, in terms of promotions, were sealed and there was no way up for him in the system with his record (citing the fact that he has been denied promotion to the rank of sergeant because of an incident involving the shooting of an unarmed boy in season 15 which he was responsible for). He also mentioned the fact that his family (daughter and son) were in California.

In real life, we can’t seem to find appropriate answers as to why he left the show. Speculations, however, have continued to grow as to the reason why the left. One explanation will be that he left so that he could pick up a regular spot on the already ongoing series Chicago P.D. in which he played the same character – Detective Nick Amaro.
