Elizabeth Banks was born on February 10, 1974, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts to a bank employee mom and General Electric factory worker dad as their first child. Banks once said she grew up poor but later had to jokingly rephrase the financial situation of her upbringing by saying she grew up middle-class. She explained that her parents didn’t like “poor”.

In high school, Banks was athletic participating in baseball, however, she considered acting after breaking her leg.

After graduating from Pittsfield High School in 1992, Banks then attended the University of Pennsylvania, from where she graduated magna cum laude in 1996 with a major in communications and a minor in theater arts, becoming the first person in her family to earn a college degree.

 

Before launching a career as an actress, Banks honed her acting skills at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, California. Subsequently, she launched her acting career in 1998 making her debut in the independent film Surrender Dorothy. Around the same time, she opened her small screen account with a role in All My Children.

By 2005, her career rose to new heights with films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), Invincible (2006), Meet Bill (2008). She also reprised her role in Spider-Man’s 2004 and 2007 sequels.
