June 2015, Gypsy Rose Blanchard hit the news for the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Even though she did not deny the crime which landed her and her boyfriend behind bars, the opinion has always been divided on whether she was the victim or the villain, no one felt sorry for her mother.

Central to Hulu’s documentary film, The Act, which had left many wondering what part is fact and what is fiction, here is all to know about Gypsy and where she is today.

Who Is Gypsy Rose Blanchard?

As noted, Gypsy came to the media light in 2015 following the murder of her mother. It was in 1991 that she was born to Rod Blanchard and Claudine Pitre who was popular as Dee Dee Blanchard. Her mother was only 24 when she had her, and her father was 17. She was named thus because while Dee Dee was a fan of the name “Gypsy”, Rod was a huge fan of the American hard rock band Guns N’ Roses.

Not too long after the birth of Gypsy, the marriage of her parents came to an end after her father was said to have realized it was for the wrong reasons that he married. Because of this, she took her daughter although her father was still involved in her life.

When she was only 3 months, her mother who had worked as a nurse was sure that her daughter was suffering from sleep apnea. There were no signs that Gypsy was suffering from this issue, but her mother was convinced and as time progressed, Dee Dee continued to add more illnesses to what she claimed was wrong with her daughter.

At the age of either 7 or 8, Gypsy Rose Blanchard had undergone a number of surgeries following a minor accident on her grandfather’s motorcycle that left her with some bruises. After this, she was confined to a wheelchair by her mother who claimed she wouldn’t be able to walk on her own, contrary to the obvious; the girl was healthy and could walk. What was more was that her parents even took her to Special Olympics events, which was for kids with intellectual and physical disabilities.

As regards her education, it is believed that she was mostly home-schooled by her mother who was convinced that her daughter had serious health challenges and couldn’t attend school. It is believed that Gypsy’s education stopped somewhere between kindergarten and second grade, and she learned to read through the Harry Potter books.

In the years that followed, her mother had had a feeding tube inserted into her, claiming that she couldn’t feed on her own. More so, she claimed her daughter was suffering from many other illnesses including cancer, epilepsy, eye and ear problems, muscular dystrophy, and even brain damage, all which have never been formally diagnosed. However, because of her experience as a nurse, the woman knew all the symptoms and was able to make doctors believe her.

The two lived in different places, including public homes before moving to Missouri. Instead of taking a regular job, Dee Dee depended on charity and public assistance to pay bills and take care of her daughter.

Why Did She Kill Her Mother?

Gypsy Rose Blanchard would continue to suffer the same thing in the hands of her mother into her early 2000s. There were times when to control her, Claudine would resort to physical abuse.

Nonetheless, she still managed to start using the internet in 2011 and she opened five different Facebook accounts, through which she met and began flirting with Nicholas Godejohn. Soon, they were considering eloping and getting married.

In 2014, Gypsy and Nicholas met for the first time in a movie theatre where she went with her mother. They maintained their relationship online before deciding to kill her mother in order for them to get away and get married. In June 2015 after perfecting their plans, Gypsy allowed him into the house and after her mother had gone to sleep, he stabbed her a number of times; leading to her death.

The two lovers had sex in the house and left with $4000 which her mother kept in the house. Most of the money came from Rob who sent it as child support for his daughter. They fled to Big Bend in Wisconsin where they were later arrested.

Where Is Gypsy Rose Blanchard Now?

Following her involvement in the murder of her mother in order to be free of her and get married, Gypsy is now in Missouri’s Chillicothe Correctional Center where she has been sentenced to spend ten years, although she will be eligible for parole in 2024.

According to her, she considered herself as a free person now compared to when she was with her mother.
