Joan Severance (birth name Joan Marie Severance) was born on 23rd of December 1958 in Houston, Texas, to John and Martha Severance. Her father John Severance worked as a manager with IBM and often had to travel for work. According to Severance, her family had relocated to different parts of the globe over 10 times by the time she turned 11 years old. The last place her family lived abroad was Libya, however, they fled the country just before the 6-day war broke out.

On reaching the United States, the family settled in Houston, Texas. This was where Severance finally grew up and got enrolled in Westbury High School.

Around the time she turned 15, Severance started her fashion modelling career in a bid to raise funds to attend college as her ambition was to study to become a veterinarian. Her veterinarian dreams were never to come to pass as she was unable to afford the required fees. However, she got noticed by the photographer Alan Martin during a Miss Houston beauty contest in which she participated.

Martin, in turn, introduced her to John Casablancas who got her a deal with the modelling agency, Elite Modeling agency. Soon after she joined the agency, she was sent to Paris for a modelling assignment. It was during her time in Paris that she met Eric Milan who was to become her future husband.

While in France, Joan Severance was featured in a lot of magazines such as Vogue Paris and Sportswear International. Upon returning to the United States, her career had really taken off and so, she became one of the top ranking models and high in demand to television commercials. Joan Severance posed nude during her modelling years – her first nude shoot was for the cover of the January 1990 issue of the Playboy magazine. She also posed for the November 1992 issue. In 1992, Joan Severance appeared in the films Illicit Behavior and Almost Pregnant. The following year, 1993, she featured in Lake Consequence and Red Shoe Dairies. Severance had a role in 1996’s Frequent Flyer and Profile for Murder. Several other films she has appeared in include Matter of Trust in 1998, The Last Seduction II in 1999, Mystery Woman in 2003, Last Sunset in 2006, Accidentally Engaged in 2016, among others.
