Lily Tomlin is an American comedian, singer, producer, writer and veteran actress whose career in the entertainment industry dates back to the 1960s. She has made several movies and television appearances, some of which brought her numerous awards and nominations.

The actress was born on September 1, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, as Mary Jean “Lily” Tomlin to parents Lillie Mae (January 14, 1914 – July 12, 2005) and Guy Tomlin (March 3, 1913 – October 24, 1970), who are Southern Baptists. Her mother was a housewife and nurse’s aide while her father, Guy was a factory worker.

Tomlin has a younger brother named Richard Tomlin and her family migrated from Paducah, Kentucky to Detriot during the Great Depression.

From Cass Technical High School to Wayne State University, Tomlin originally studied biology but found her true calling in the entertainment industry after auditioning for a play in the theatre. Subsequently, she changed her major to study acting at the HB Studio and started performing stand-up comedy at nightclubs. Her first television appearance was in The Merv Griffin Show (1965).

Tomlin was cast in her first film in 1974, and her signature role was in The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe which opened on Broadway in 1985. The movie won her the Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Play.

Moreso, her first Emmy Awards came in 1974 after she wrote and produced her own television special, Lily. For her 1972 comedy album titled This Is a Recording, she won a Grammy Award.
