Born as Miesha Theresa Tate on August 18, 1986, in Tacoma, Washington, Tate parents are Rob and Michelle Tate. She was raised alongside one sibling, a younger sister named Felicia Martin. Growing up, she was a tomboy and regularly mingled with the boys in her area. She had her high school education at Franklin Pierce High School where, interestingly, she was a member of the boys wrestling team from her freshman year until graduation. As a senior in 2005, she won the 2005 Washington State Girls’ Wrestling Championship.

Tate got introduced to mixed martial arts while studying at Central Washington University and owing to her wrestling background, she fit in perfectly. She was defeated in her first amateur bout in March 2006, however, she was able to cumulate a 5-1 (win-loss) record before eventually turning pro the following year.

In November 2006, Tate marked her debut as a professional mixed martial artist at the HOOKnSHOOT Women’s Grand Prix. She won her first bout of the tournament before losing out to the eventual champion Kaitlin Young. She recorded further wins under a couple of smaller MMA companies including CageSport MMA, Freestyle Cage Fighting (FCF) and Atlas Fights.

On April 4, 2009, she defeated Liz Carreiro at Freestyle Cage Fighting (FCF) to win the 135-pound FCF Women’s Bantamweight Championship, the first title of her career. Two years later, she captured the Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Championship at the Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson event held on July 30, 2011. Her reign as Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight champion came to an end on March 3, 2012, at the Strikeforce: Tate vs. Rousey event when she lost the title to .

Miesha Tate among several other fighters moved on to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) when Strikeforce was discontinued in early 2013. She was defeated in her first 2 bouts under the UFC before eventually recording her first win on April 19, 2014, at the UFC on Fox: Werdum vs. Browne event. Her winning streak continued over 4 consecutive fights extending her UFC win-loss record to 4-2.

At the UFC 196: McGregor vs. Diaz event held on March 5, 2016, Tate defeated  to become the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion. This turned out to be the last win of her career as she lost to Amanda Nunes in July 2016 and was also defeated by Raquel Pennington at UFC 205 held in November 2016. Tate announced her retirement from the sport immediately after her loss at UFC 205 on November 12, 2016.
