She was born Nia Talita Long on October 30, 1970, in Brooklyn, New York. Her mother Talita Long (née Gillman) was an art teacher. Her father Doughtry Long was equally a teacher and a poet.

Her parents got divorced when she was just two years of age. Her mother, who was then a master’s degree candidate at the University of Iowa, relocated to Iowa City taking Nia with her. They later relocated to South Central Los Angeles. Nia Long completed her high school education at Westchester High School, Los Angeles and she graduated in 1989. In addition to school work, she also enrolled for classes in ballet, jazz, guitar, gymnastics and of course, acting.

A few years after she left high school, Nia Long recorded her big screen debut in John Singleton’s debut effort Boyz N the Hood (1991), which was filmed near her home. Boyz N the Hood is also credited to have launched the careers of other Hollywood bigwigs such as , Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr. and the movie also earned the director John Singleton an Oscar nomination at age 23.

However, Long got her big break in 1991 when she joined the cast of the daytime soap Guiding Light, on a three-year contract playing the role of Kathryn “Kat” Speake. On the show, Long was able to learn the rudiments of the acting profession. In 1994, she landed a bigger role in the comedy series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, playing the role of  girlfriend. She was handpicked for the role by the show’s star .

Throughout the 90s till the turn of the century, Nia Long remained consistent and relevant, taking on acting roles which cut across various genres and audiences. Long starred in the 1997 cult classic Love Jones, Soul Food (1997) and the well-acclaimed 1999 romantic comedy The Best Man. Her role in Big Momma’s House (2000) earned her a nomination for the 2001 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture as well as the Blockbuster Entertainment Award for Favorite Actress in a Comedy.

In addition to her movie successes, Nia Long also recorded numerous roles on the small screen including Judging Amy (2001–02), Third Watch (2003-05), Boston Legal (2007) and House of Lies (2008). In 2017, the talented actress landed a role on the crime drama series NCIS: Los Angeles.

According to media reports, Nia Long is not married. However, she is engaged to her longtime boyfriend Ime Sunday Udoka who is a former NBA player-turned-coach. Ime Udoka joined the San Antonio Spurs in 2012 as an assistant coach.

The relationship between the two dates back to 2010. A year after that, they welcomed their first child, a son named Kez Sunday Udoka. They got engaged in May 2015.

Ime Udoka was born August 9, 1977, to a Nigerian father and an American mother. His father is from Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria while his mother was an Illinois native. His sister Mfon Udoka played for the WNBA and internationally for the Nigerian women basketball team.

During his NBA career, Ime Udoka played for the L.A. Lakers, the New York Knicks, the Portland Trail Blazers and the Sacramento Kings. He played internationally for Nigeria’s national basketball team and represented the country in championships such as the 2005 African Championship, the 2006 FIBA World Championship and the 2011 African Championship.

Nia Long has two kids. Her first son Massai Zhivago Dorsey II was born on November 26, 2000. Long gave birth to him while she was with actor Massai Dorsey. On November 7, 2011, Nia Long welcomed her second child Kez Sunday Udoka with her fiancé Ime Sunday Udoka.
