Nneka Ogwumike is an America born basketballer who currently plays for the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA. Born July 2, 1990, to Parents of Nigeria descent, Nneka (meaning Mother is Supreme) began playing basketball right from High School.

As a student of Cypress-Fairbanks High School, Cypress, Texas, she played in her school’s team and led them to a 5A State Championship during her senior season. During the 2007-08 season, she recorded an average of 16.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 2.4 steals and 0.8 blocks per game. 

She participated in the 2008 WBCA High School All-America Game, scoring 17 points, and grabbing 6 rebounds, she went on to earn the MVP honors for the White team. Nneka Ogwumike was also named a WBCA All-American.

Nneka also played college basketball before being drafted by the L.A Sparks their No. 1 overall in the 2012 WNBA Draft. She chose to play for Stanford over playing for the likes of Tennessee, Notre Dame, Baylor, Connecticut, and Duke.

At Stanford, she helped the Cardinal get to the Final Four four times, became second all-time after Candice Wiggins, with 2,491 points; she became the fourth player in the history of Stanford to tally 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She was also named Pac-12 Player of the Year, Pac-10 Player of the Year, All-Pac 12 First Team and All-Defensive Team honorable mention, Pac-10 Tournament Most Outstanding Player, All-Pac-10 Team, among others.

Ogwumike was so good that she ended her career with the Cardinals with the following records: points scored (2,491 – ranked second), field-goal percentage (58.3 – ranked third), free throws attempted (718 – ranked first), rebounds (1,226 – third), free throws made (555 – second), free throws made (191), Set single-season records for points scored (809), points per game (17.2 – ranked fourth), rebounds per game (8.5 – ranked fourth), attempted (230) and points per game (22.5).

WNBA Career

Nneka Ogwumike’s WNBA’s career kicked off in 2012 after she was drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks as No. 1 overall in the 2012 WNBA Draft, becoming the second player from her High School (Cypress-Fairbanks High School) to be drafted No. 1 overall into the WNBA. The first person was Lindsey Harding.

During her Rookie season, she was named WNBA Rookie of the Month four out of five times and was also awarded the 2012 WNBA Rookie of the Year. In 2014, she was voted as a WNBA All-star for the second time in her career. During the 2016 season, she was named AP WNBA Player of the Year, after finishing third in the league, her records also earned her the 2016 WNBA Most Valuable Player Award. In the same year, she was named President of the WNBA Players Association.

She signed a contract extension with the Sparks in 2017 and was soon voted into the 2017 WNBA All-Star Game. At the end of the season, she led the Sparks to score for the second season in a row, and the team finished #2 seed for the second year in a row and went on to advance to the Finals for the second season in a row, defeating the Phoenix Mercury in a 3-game sweep. Unfortunately, the Sparks would later lose in five games and failed to win the championships.

USA Basketball & Club Career

Nneka was part of the USA Women’s U18 team that won the gold medal at the 2008 FIBA Americas Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The following year, she joined the  U19 team that went for the World Championship in Bangkok, Thailand.

She also joined the team that represented the country and won a gold medal at the World University Games. She was ranked second on the team after scoring (13.2 ppg), with rebounding (5.7 RPG) and a shooting percentage of 65.3.

The sensational player has also been involved with some clubs. During the 2012-13 off-season, she played for Polish CCC Polkowice and actually won a championship with the team. She has played three off-seasons for Russia’s Dynamo Kursk since Since 2014.

Awards And Honours

Her many awards and honors include the 2016 WNBA Most Valuable Player, 2012 WNBA Rookie of the Year. She is also a four-time WNBA All-Star, a three-time All-WNBA Team, three-time WNBA All-Defensive Team, Ten-time WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week, among many others.
