The year of his birth was 1990 and it was in St. Louis, Missouri that he was received into this world under the care and nurture of Michael and Zelda (née Robinson) Richardson.

Growing up into his teens, Alan was enrolled at Gateway Institute of Technology High School in St. Louis where he began practicing and playing soccer- the sports loved most by Americans. He trained and played with the Gateway Jaguars high school football team as a defensive tackle and also tried his hands on other sports like basketball, baseball and track events.

College Career

Following his impressive performance in his senior high school season, Sheldon Richardson drew lots of accolade to himself as he was listed as the No. 1 defensive tackle and No. 4 best player overall by Rivals.com. In addition, USA Today named him as a high school All-American.

Having such remarkable football prowess, Sheldon Richardson was set to develop his game even further and in pursuant of this dream, the Missouri kid proceeded first to the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, California where he spent two years before transferring to the University of Missouri where he learned a lot playing college football for the Missouri Tigers football team beginning from 2011 through 2012 under coach Gary Pinkel.

The young footballer with lots of steam in him decided to forgo his final year of college to enter the 2013 NFL Draft. He was picked by the New York Jets in the first round and 13th overall of the draft. Sheldon was the first defensive tackle to be picked by a team in the draft and as such, a lot of eyes were on him. The terms of his contract read four years and it was worth $10.05 million fully guaranteed and $5.69 million as his signing bonus.

Professional Career

Sheldon Richardson saw his first NFL action as a starting defensive end in November 2013. In his first month, he won the NFL Rookie of the Month. He was switched to a fullback position in the next games and became the first NFL defensive lineman to score a rushing touchdown since 2011.

In the 2014 season, his good form and impressive style of play saw him being named in the Pro Bowl selection and that was the first of his career. As his first contract neared expiration in 2016, Sheldon Richardson got a fifth-year option that was worth $8.06 million, fully guaranteed. To this, Sheldon committed to play one more season for the New York Jets.

However, his time with the jets wasn’t void of delinquent misdemeanors as he was severally suspended from games for one misconduct or the other as well as being fined at a time.

 

By September 2017, Sheldon Richardson was traded to the Seattle Seahawks who immediately switched him to a defensive tackle position instead of the defensive end position he manned for the Jets. For the single season he played for them, he recorded 44 combined tackles (27 solo), a sack and a pass defended in addition to an interception and a forced fumble all in 15 games of 15 starts he played for the Seahawks.

Come March 16, 2018, he moved over to the Minnesota Vikings where he would ply his trade for the next one year pending when his contract expires.
