Sia is an Australian born singer/songwriter, music video director as well as a record producer, who has a string of accolades to her name, as well as a huge fan base.  She began her singing career with a local Jazz band in her birth town called acid jazz band Crisp in the mid-1990s, and when the Jazz band disbanded, she went on to release her first studio album, OnlySee, before moving to London in 1997 to further give wings to her dreams.

But don’t you think her rise was spontaneous as the famous singer like many music artists had a very humble beginning and also had her own share of pain and struggles while on her journey to success. Brief Bio – Age

Sia was born as Sia Kate Isobelle Furler on the 18th day of December 1975, in Adelaide, South Australia, to a musician named Phil Colson and his art lecturer wife, Loene Furler. She attended Adelaide High School and attended the University of Adelaide briefly. There is no information about having any siblings. She is probably her parents’ only child.

She is a niece to actor and singer, Kevin Colson and a cousin to Australian Christian rock singer, Peter Furler. Sia loved music right from an early age and with a father being a musician, it was almost natural she would. She recalled imitating the performing styles of , Sting, and as a child. She refers to these singers as her ‘early influencers.’

Sia’s Music Career

She began her career in the mid-1990s, singing in a local Australian band acid jazz band Crisp. Sia contributed vocals to the band’s two EPs: Word and the Deal and Delirium which came out in 1996 and 1997 respectively.

After the band group disbanded in 1997, Sia released her first studio album titled OnlySee, under Flavoured Records. The album didn’t do so well, as only about 1,200 copies were sold. After this time, she relocated to London in pursuit of her career.

In London, she started off with British band, Jamiroquai as a background vocalist before moving over to another band group Zero 7 as a vocalist. She contributed vocals to their first three albums and also toured with them. In the year 2000, Sia released her first single – Taken for Granted under Sony Music’s sub-label, Dance Pool. The single did quite well as it peaked at No. 10 of the U.K Singles Chart.

The next year (2001), she released her second solo album titled, Healing Is Difficult. The album was a blend of retro jazz and soul music and its lyrics discussed how she dealt with the death of her first love affair. The album didn’t do quite well and Sia in anger fired her manager, left Sony music and signed on with a Universal Music Group (UMG) subsidiary, Go! Beat. Her first award came in 2002, where she, together with Brisbane pop duo Aniki’s Jennifer Waite and Grant Wallis won the Breakthrough Songwriter category at the APRA Awards.

Her third solo album, Colour the Small One, was released in 2004. Singles from the album “Don’t Bring Me Down”, “Breathe Me”, “Where I Belong” and “Numb” became major hits across the country and beyond, staying top on several countries’ charts. This increased her fame in the U.K, France, Denmark and even in the U.S.

“Where I Belong” was soon considered for Spider-Man 2, soundtrack, but owing to a record label issue, it was eventually dropped. However, “Breathe Me”, made it to the U.S. HBO television series Six Feet Under, and further made the singer famous in the U.S.

Sia became dissatisfied with the way the album Colour the Small One was marketed and how she was struggling to connect with a mainstream audience, thus, moved to New York City in 2005, and her manager, David Enthoven, organized a tour across the country for her, to help her maintain her career.

In 2007, she released a Live album entitled Lady Croissant, which was followed by a fourth studio album Some People Have Real Problems. The album soon ranked No. 41 in Australia and got a gold star from the Australian Recording Industry Association. In the U.S, it peaked at 26 on the Billboard 200,  making it her first album to chart in the U.S.

Her fifth studio album We Are Born, was released in June 2010, it peaked at No. 2 on the ARIA Albums Chart and received gold certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association. The album was a huge success that it further increased her popularity which made her so uncomfortable that she began to hide from the public.

She turned down promos, even for her tours, and began wearing a mask on stage, became increasingly dependent on drugs and alcohol and considered suicide. She soon retired as a recording artist after firing her manager Enthoven and hiring Jonathan Daniel, who gave her the idea of writing songs for other artists.

Sia began her songwriting career by writing “Titanium” for singer . Between 2011 and 2013, she wrote songs for different other artists including Flo Rida, , and .

She soon bounced back as a recording artist, in 2013, she released “Elastic Heart” which became the soundtrack for American film The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. She released her sixth studio album 1000 Forms of Fear in 2014 and in one week, it sold 52,000 copies and peaked at No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 and on the Australian chart. By early the following year (2016), the album had sold 1 million copies worldwide.

The album also got Sia four nominations for Best Music Video, Record of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the Year, at 2015 Grammy Awards. In the same year, she also was nominated alongside Kurstin, director Will Gluck at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards for Best Original Song for Annie’s original songs, “Opportunity”.

In 2017, Sia alongside her dancers, led by performed at the closing events of the Dubai World Cup. That same year, she moved to Atlantic Records and by November, she released a new album, Every Day Is Christmas.

In 2018, she joined a collaborative project called LSD with American DJ/record producer Diplo and English musician Labrinth.

The talented singer/songwriter announced her relationship with U.S singer, songwriter, producer, and DJ, JD Samson, they, however, called it quits in 2011. In 2014, she got married to a documentary filmmaker, Erik Anders Lang at her home in Palm Springs, California. The couple divorced two years later and Sia is single at the moment.

About her sexual orientation, Sia revealed in interviews, that she has always dated boys, girls and anything in between and that she doesn’t care what gender they are into, “it’s about people”, she said in one of the interviews.

What Does She Look Like?

The Australian singer-songwriter is one of those artists who would prefer the world to just celebrate their works without necessarily knowing them. As Sia’s fame began increasing, she began wearing masks on stage and during performances to hide her identity. So you will find her hide her visage during performances with huge wigs, bows and all manner of headgear.

At other times, she wouldn’t face the audience during performances and would let her dancers lead by Ziegler represent her instead – just like she did at the 57th annual Grammy Awards in 2015. She appeared on stage in an oversized platinum wig with her back turned to the crowd, while two dancers dressed in nude bodysuits and matching platinum wigs writhed around the stage in her stead.
