Troy Gentry was a well-known American country music celebrity amongst the generation before the millennia’s. He had a partner known as Eddie Montgomery and the two started performing way back in the 1990’s as two different bands while in 1999 they came together to establish Montgomery Gentry. Who Was Troy Gentry?

Troy Gentry was born to Patricia and Lloyd Gentry on April 5, 1967, in Lexington, Kentucky. He had siblings, a brother named Keith Gentry and a Sister named Jana Gentry Eckhardt. Their family was a happy one as the kids had their parents to themselves. Troy Gentry enrolled at the neighbourhood Lexington Community College when he was due for college and later attended the University of Kentucky after graduating from College.

Troy’s friend and musical partner Eddie Montgomery founded the sensational Early Tymz band in 1990 which had no equal at that time. The Early Tymz band had as one of its members, his younger brother John Michael Montgomery and of course Troy Gentry. The formation of this band helped in no small way to encourage Troy’s musical interest and nurtured his desire of making it big as a musician. However, the group was not to last forever or rather for a long time as it got disbanded a few years later.

Solo Career

Troy Gentry went solo and kept performing for some time; it was in the course of this interim solo performance that he decided to shortlist for the Jim Beam National Talent Contest in 1994. He subsequently won the competition as the overall best. This led him to open for Patty Loveless and Tracy Byrd in hopes to continue being a solo artist and advance his career. However, things were not all smooth for him as he was unable to secure a record deal. He soon reunited with his longtime friend and former music partner Eddie Montgomery to form a band which went by the appellation Deuce.

Deuce played at local nightclubs and was quite famous among locals then. They decided to rebrand the name to something that easily and readily revealed the identity of the owners, so they went for Montgomery Gentry and subsequently signed with Columbia Records in 1999. Thus, what Troy Gentry couldn’t achieve as a solo artist, he achieved it in collaboration with his old-time music partner Eddie Montgomery.

Montgomery Gentry continued to make music and release albums in 1999/2000 with the likes of Tattoos & Scars, Carrying on in 2001/2002 to Rebels on the Run and Friends and Family in 2011/2012 and lastly Folks like Us in 2013/2015 which was, unfortunately, their penultimate album before the tragic death of Troy Gentry.

In November of 2016, they re-signed record deals with Average Joes Entertainment after leaving Blaster Records. They were working on a new album which was set to be released in 2017. They completed the album before the death of Troy and it was released September 8, 2017. The album is titled Here’s to you. Eddie Montgomery has made known his desire to continue with the band name of Montgomery Gentry as an act.

Facts About Troy Gentry’s Wife, Daughter and Family

Troy is no more but the family he left behind still lives on. Troy Gentry married his wife, Angie McClure at Maui Hawaii on December 14, 1999, at a time when everything was going perfectly well in his music career. Troy had a child from a previous marriage to a woman named Kai Gentry. It is not known when they officially divorced but they had a daughter named Taylor Gentry. His child with Angie McClure was born in November 2002 and named Kaylee Gentry. They derived her name Kaylee from both of their middle names. Angie’s middle name is Kay while that of Troy is Lee.

His Death and Funeral

Troy Gentry died at the age of 50 on October 8, 2017, by 1:00 pm in a helicopter crash which also took the life of the pilot. He was taking a helicopter tour of Medford, New Jersey where he and Eddie Montgomery were set to perform later that evening when the crash happened. The pilot died at the scene of the crash while Troy gave up the ghost while being rushed to the hospital.

The band Montgomery Gentry announced his death on their official Twitter handle where it stated with great sadness that Troy Gentry, half of the popular country duo, Montgomery Gentry, was tragically killed in a helicopter crash which took place at Medford, New Jersey.

On September 14, 2017, a public memorial service which was well attended was held for Troy Gentry at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Troy Gentry is no more, but his music and legacy lives on.
