Amy Carlson’s Biography

Born Amy Lynn Carlson, the actress came into the world on July 7, 1968, in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Her earliest memories are of growing up with her siblings in the Chicago area. However, her parents, Bob Carlson and Barb Carlson, who were teachers, were offered an opportunity to come to teach in Amman, Jordan. They accepted the offer and moved with Amy and her siblings – Betsy, Lori, and Joe – to the little Middle Eastern country where they would spend a year. Amy was 13 years old at the time.

Upon her return to the US, Amy enrolled at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. She was active in the school’s theatre department and was involved in a slew of stage plays including Noises Off, A Lie of the Mind, and Fifth of July. She moved on from the institution in 1978 having graduated cum laude.

Career

Carlson’s big screen soap opera debut came in 1993. She was selected to play the role of Josie Watts in the soap opera Another World. Her performance earned her a Daytime Emmy Award nomination five years later. The 90s were a busy time for the actress. She made guest appearances and had recurring roles in television films like Missing Persons, Thanks of a Grateful Nation, Martial Law, and Get Real.

In the 2000s, she secured more roles in series and films like NYPD Blue, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, NCIS, Peacemakers, Law & Order: Trial by Jury, and Everything Put Together.

Amy Carlson started 2010 by joining the cast of the popular police procedural Blue Bloods. Here, she played the role of a nurse Linda Reagan who was the wife to Donnie Wahlberg’s character, Danny Reagan. She stayed with the show from its premiere to the seventh season after which she left the show. In 2011, Carlson played Jessica Jordan in the superhero movie Green Lantern.

She was also Christina Casserta in 2014’s Hits, Laura in Natural Selection (2015), Erin Callahan in Too Big to Fail (2011), and Maureen Donovan in an episode of Fringe (2010).

Amy Carlson is in a relationship with her long-time partner, Syd Butler. She met him in 1997 while she was attending a Saturday Night Live Party. They hit it off and became a couple in 2004. Syd works on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers as the bass guitarist of the show’s 8G band. He is also a member of Les Savy Fav an independent rock outfit. The couple also owns and operates an independent record label called Frenchkiss Records.

Together, Amy and Syd have two children. Their daughter, Lyla Butler came in 2006, and their son Nigel Butler came three years later.

Why Did Amy Carlson Leave Blue Bloods?

Many fans rightly believed that Linda Reagan was an indispensable part of the show having appeared for 155 episodes. So it is expected that they were shocked to find out in the season premiere of the eighth season that Amy’s character had died in a helicopter crash.

When asked about her reasons for leaving abruptly and without warning, Amy Carlson did not give any conclusive answer. The closest she came to a reveal suggested that there were contract negotiations delays and other financial issues that did not sit well with the actress. She announced her departure on Twitter and thanked the network CBS, her co-stars, and fans.

However, after the way her character was killed off hastily and off-screen, she expressed her disappointment in the way it was done. Amy, like many fans of the show, believed that there should have been a proper and well-scripted on-screen tragedy, funeral and tears to go with it. In an interview with , Carlson revealed that she would be open to a return to the show to do some flashback scenes of her demise that would afford the fans the closure they so desperately need.

What is She Doing Now?

While Amy Carlson may not like the way things ended with Blue Bloods, the show did help boost her acting portfolio significantly. She did not stay idle for very long before securing another project in 2018, playing a character named Grace in the movie A Bread Factory, Part One. Following this movie, she quickly lined up two other roles: as Jerry in the comedy, The Incoherents, and as Samantha in the drama Sunny Daze. For the former, she got to work with the likes of Jason Wiles and Michael Beach.
