Over a decade ago, we were introduced to a new cinematic multiverse with the release of the original Cloverfield movie in 2008 and it quickly became a cult classic with a vast following. It was critically appraised as a refreshing and deeply entertaining movie. As millions of viewers from all over the world showed interest in the beautifully executed picture, it helped the film to become commercially viable. In the years that followed, two sequels have joined the movie franchise, contributing to the expansion of the Cloverfield universe, while pouring out some of the breathtaking action and mystery which have made the franchise super popular.
How Many Cloverfield Movies Have Been Released?
The Cloverfield films are created and produced by Bad Robot, a major production company owned and run by J.J. Abrams, and each installment has revolved around a powerful alien race that is determined to take over Earth and destroy her inhabitants. The movies have made it to cinemas as well as a couple of streaming platforms like Netflix. Audiences everywhere have become enchanted with the web of mystery and entertainment that the Cloverfield movies have spun with their narratives, and they’re still excitedly awaiting the release of more sequels.
At the moment, the Cloverfield series is comprised of three films: Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and The Cloverfield Paradox. All the movies so far have introduced a unique tone and style to the viewers. The first installment in the franchise, Cloverfield, unraveled the story of aliens arising from the oceans and dominating the world. The movie unfolds through the eyes of a footage film found in an underground bunker.
On the other hand, 10 Cloverfield Lane was set in the post-alien invasion world, and it revolves around the people who had survived the reign of terror and their attempts to piece life back together. The Cloverfield Paradox is a horror-thriller set in space, in a different world, whose inhabitants must also go up against the mysterious monster aliens who attacked earth. Despite the buzz that surrounded its release, Paradox failed to live up to anyone’s expectations.
The Cloverfield Paradox was released to mixed reviews and it nearly tanked commercially. The criticism that followed the movie was mostly unfavorable, leaving fans in doubt as to where the franchise was headed in future.
Will There Be a New Cloverfield Movie After The Cloverfield Paradox?
After The Cloverfield Paradox reached the movie theaters as well as the content streaming giant, Netflix in February 2018, audiences who devoted their time to the film expressed their disappointment in the sequel. According to many, the film did very little by way of connecting its storyline to the original Cloverfield movie. However, fans can put their minds at ease because Paramount has announced it would be releasing a new Cloverfield movie in conjunction with Bad Robots.
While at CinemaCon 2018, J.J. Abrams confirmed the news, stating that they were indeed working on a true and dedicated sequel for the franchise. He promised that the new Cloverfield movie will be released very soon, although he failed to qualify just how soon. The new film will be a direct response to some of the questions raised in the 2008 Cloverfield movie. As a true sequel, it will pick up from where the original left off and throw much-needed light on the origins of the alien monsters.
As it stands, the untitled Cloverfield 4 has already been given the green light, but there is still some uncertainty as to whether the script for the movie is finished or casting or any production whatsoever has begun on the new Cloverfield movie.
Is The Cloverfield Franchise Going to End Soon?
The future of the Cloverfield movies might be on shaky ground after March 2020 when Paramount Pictures’ deal with the Bad Robot production company runs out. However, the producer and screenwriter, Abrams, is already working to secure a new deal with studios like Apple and WarnerMedia.
Until Abrams finds a new studio for his production company to sign with, all plans for more Cloverfield movies beyond the fourth installment have been put on hold. A lot rests on the shoulders of Cloverfield 4. The success of the movie might help simplify the problem as many studios will be excited to back the franchise going forward as long as there is proof of demand and interest for more films.
While no release date has been set for the upcoming Cloverfield movie, fans can take comfort in the promise that a new one is being made. If there’s one thing the release of other installments in the franchise has taught us, it’s that the movie will drop when least expected. Regardless, we can’t wait to see the trailer for the yet-untitled sequel.
