Wolf’s parents spent time in a Nazi-operated concentration camp before he was born. Both Jewish refugees, his mother Cesia was a stay at home wife while is father David Blitzer was a home builder. Wolf Isaac Blitzer was born in Augsburg, Germany on March 22, 1948. In his early childhood, his family moved to the United States where he attended Kenmore West Senior High School and the State University of New York at Buffalo, from where he graduated with a B.A. in history in 1970.

He furthered his studies at John Hopkins University from where he graduated with a Master of Arts in International Relations. During his time, he also spent time learning the Hebrew language at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Following his time at John Hopkins, he worked in a couple of Israeli affiliated news companies including The Tel Aviv bureau, the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), and Jerusalem Post. In the employ of the latter, he stayed until 1990.

After his time with Jerusalem Post, Wolf Blitzer joined CNN in mid-1990 as the reporter for military matters. His time in this capacity saw him visit KGB headquarters and also cover the first Gulf War that unfolded in Kuwait.

As he became more famous in the news business, CNN made him the network’s White House Correspondent in 1992. He continued to establish his brand when he covered the Oklahoma City bombing of 1995, an endeavor for which he received an Emmy Award. In 1998, he became the anchor and host for CNN’s Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer. He followed this up with Wolf Blitzer Reports, which he anchored for five years from 2000 until sometime in 2005.

His biggest responsibility on the network yet started in 2005. He became the host of network’s most-watched political show, The Situation Room. Blitzer has also helped the network cover every presidential election since George Bush Jr.’s second tenure in 2004. Between 1999 and 2014, the journalist received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from six different universities. These include the University at Buffalo, George Washington University, Niagara University, Howard University, Penn State University, and the University of Hartford.

Wolf’s award repository includes a 2003 Daniel Pearl Award, a 2004 Journalist Pillar of Justice Award, and a 2002 American Veteran Awards’ Ernie Pyle Journalism Award for military reporting. Over the course of his career, Wolf Blitzed has written a number of books covering different aspect and experiences at different periods in his career. These include Between Washington and Jerusalem: A Reporter’s Notebook (1985); and Territory of Lies (1989).
