No list of the most popular movie series in the history of Hollywood will be complete without the mention of the X-Men. At the core of the film series is the character, Wolverine, and many argue that there would be no X-Men without him. He is so significant that he not only several films dedicated to his story but he is almost always pertinent to the storylines even when he is not the central mutant character. However, the back and forth shift in timelines can be confusing even for the most dedicated of viewers and this is why we have compiled the Wolverine movies both in their consecutive order of release and also the order in which you should watch them.

Wolverine Movies In Their Order Of Release

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

This is the fourth film in the X-Men series and the first prequel in what would become the standalone Wolverine trilogy. The film focuses on Wolverine’s violent past including details of his childhood, his encounter with Major Stryker, Team X and how his bones became fused with the indestructible Adamantium metal during the program that made him what he is, the Weapon X program.

The Wolverine (2013)

Set after the events of X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), The Wolverine is the second movie in the trilogy and the sixth installment in the X-Men series. The premise sees Wolverine in Japan where he is reunited with an old acquaintance. He then finds himself in a situation where he must protect himself and his acquaintance’s granddaughter from samurai fighters and assassins while dealing with some personal issues of his own, without his healing powers.

Logan (2017)

Logan is the third and final installment in the Wolverine trilogy and the tenth film in the series. For the ninth and final time in the X-Men series, portrays Wolverine/Logan in the film which is set in an alternate future in the year 2029, where an elderly Wolverine and a sickly Professor Charles Xavier meet and defend Wolverine’s young mutant daughter, Laura, from the Zander Rice and Donald Pierce-led Reavers team hunting her.

In addition to appearing in the above mentioned Wolverine movies, the Wolverine character has also appeared in many ensemble movies in the X-men film series, including X-Men (2000), X2: X-Men United (2003), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), X-Men: First Class (cameo) – 2011, The Wolverine (2013), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), and X-Men: Apocalypse (2016). Archival footage of him is featured in Deadpool 2 (2018).

How You Should Watch Wolverine Movies

Based on the timeline of each, this is how you should watch the Wolverine movies.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine – As explained above, this pretty much takes you through the genesis of the mutant Wolverine and how he came to become what he is.

X-Men – This is the very first installment in the nearly two-decade-long series, the film focuses on how the mutants, Wolverine and Rogue, were introduced into the clash between the Magneto-led Brotherhood Of Mutants and the Professor’s team of mutants called the X-men in their fight for mutant acceptance in a world dominated by humans. However, both leaders have two completely different approaches.

X2: X-Men United – When Professor Xavier gets kidnapped by the mutant-hating William Stryker and attacks the Professor’s school of the gifted, The X-men form an alliance with Magneto’s Brotherhood to stop him.

X-Men Last Stand – After the humans developed a pharmaceutical “cure” for mutants, Wolverine is faced with a difficult decision concerning his former team member Jean Grey who Magneto now uses as a weapon in the X-men and the Brotherhood’s final battle.

The Wolverine – This is the second installment in the standalone Wolverine movie Trilogy. It was written by Scott Frank and Mark Bomback but was directed by James Mangold.

X-Men Days Of Future Past – This one explores two timelines as Wolverine travels back in time to the year 1973 to prevent an assassination that led to a catastrophe for both humans and mutants in their present time.

Logan – The last film in the Wolverine Trilogy and Hugh Jackman’s final portrayal of Wolverine. Interestingly, it is also ‘s final portrayal of Professor X.
