The 2017 film which was the first live-action theatrical release having Wonder Woman as the lead character was both critically and commercially successful, making over $820 million from the global box office. Audiences left cinemas after viewing the first movie, anticipating for a sequel that has now been revealed would be titled Wonder Woman 1984.

Wonder Woman 1984: Next Sequel’s Release Date

First off, there is this controversy surrounding whether or not Wonder Woman 1984 is actually a sequel or not. In an interview with , Charles Roven – the producer of the film, revealed that the director (she is the first woman to ever direct a superhero film) does not want the film treated as a sequel but simply “the next iteration of Wonder Woman.”

The film would pick up from the events after WWII and would thus be set several years later from the first movie which was set in 1918 around the end of WWI. Though it would reference the first movie, Wonder Woman 1984 would be telling a completely different story, including what happened with the titular character in the intervening years.

The development for Wonder Woman 1984 began right in the same month shortly after the release of the previous one. It was highly likely going to happen as the titular character had inked a contract to play the role in three live-action theatrical feature-length films, the first of which was 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

In the following month, July 2017, the sequel was referred to as Wonder Woman 2 with Jenkins the director for the first film being confirmed to return to direct, as well as contribute to the script alongside comic book writer, Geoff Johns. Around the same time, it was revealed that couple – Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder would serve as producers.

The title of the next Wonder Woman film as officially revealed on the 13th of June 2018 is Wonder Woman 1984. The first release date set for the film was the 13th of December 2019 ( would be released on this day), however, it was later moved to the first of November 2019. As of the time of this writing, the film’s release date is slated for the 5th of June 2020.

Cast

Gal Gadot would return to play the Amazonian princess Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. Her archenemy, according to the DC comic books The Cheetah, who was not in the first movie, would be in Wonder Woman 1984 to be the pain in her butt. The Cheetah/ Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva would be played by Kristen Wiig.

Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright would also both return in their immortal roles as Hippolyta (Diane’s mother) and Antiope (Hippolyta sister and Diane’s aunt) respectively, however, the later will only appear in flashback scenes.

Technically, all the mortals in the first film must have died in the time in which the Wonder Woman 1984 is set, but surprisingly, – Diane’s love interest is set to return to reprise the role of Steve Trevor. How exactly this is possible would be revealed when the movie hits the cinemas, Jenkins has after all pointed out that Wonder Woman 1984 would not be a sequel.

Also to feature in a top role is – Yes! the one who played Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones and got killed by Ser Gregor aka the Mountain in the goriest way after offering to represent Tyrion Lannister in a trial by combat. Though his Wonder Woman role hasn’t exactly been revealed, the trailer gives suspicions that he could be the DC Comic Maxwell Lord (the rich and controlling industrialist).

Others cast in Wonder Woman 1984 in undisclosed roles are Gabriella Wilde, Kristoffer Polaha, Natasha Rothwell, and Ravi Patel.
