YG grew up in a rough neighborhood where he was exposed to several odd kinds of lifestyle. But the young rapper never stopped dreaming big and today he is signed to the record label owned by his role model Jay-Z. The rapper, songwriter and actor is currently signed to Def Jam and has previously worked with CTE World. His music genre is west coast hip hop.
YG Bio and Age
Obviously, he wasn’t born as YG, as it is just a stage name which means Young Gangster. His real name is Keenon Daequan Ray Jackson. He was born on March 9, 1990, and is a native of Compton, California.
Growing up, he was raised by his grandparents. His dad was never readily available following his continuous issues with the law which kept him in jail for most of YG’s childhood years. His mother, Shonee Jackson used to operate a daycare business in Paramount. When the daycare business wasn’t fetching enough income, she left there and started working at a grocery store. She also worked at the popular fast foods company, McDonald’s. Things got more difficult for YG’s family when they lost their home and were forced to struggle to survive.
The neighborhood he grew up in, in addition to the struggle he faced while growing up led him to be influenced by bad company. He joined the Bloods gang at the age of 16 and was exposed to various illegal activities like robbery and drug dealing, which in return led him to serve some jail time.
Regardless of the wrong company he kept and the struggle he passed through, one thing that kept him straight was his passion for rap music. As a teenager, YG used to perform in clubs and it helped build up his rap career.
He started his music career in 2005 but dropped his first album in 2014. The album was initially scheduled to be released in 2012 as I’m 4rm Bompton, but after several delays on which label would release it, it got held up and was released two years after the scheduled date with the new title My Krazy Life. One of the tracks on the album, titled Who Do You Love?, featured in it and was produced by DJ Mustard. The song peaked at number 19 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
YG’s second studio album was released on June 17, 2016, and it is titled Still Brazy. The album featured Canadian rapper Drake amongst other artists. In 2018, he dropped his third album, Stay Dangerous. He first announced the release of the album on his Instagram page prior to its eventual release.
YG’s fourth studio album was initially scheduled to be released on April 12, 2019, as announced on his Twitter page, but following the death of his close friend, Nipsey Hussle, YG was compelled to delay the release date of the album.
As an actor, he has starred in 5 films. First was in We the Party, a 2012 film in which he starred as C.C. In the same year, he played a cameo role as a student in Mac & Devin Go to High School. The film starred rap stars and as its main characters, Mac and Devin. He also featured in White T, Blame it On the Streets and White Boy Rick.
