1. How Was The Gugudan Girl Group Formed?

Gugudan is a nine-girl group created by Jellyfish Entertainment in 2016. The first members of the group, Sejeong and Mina were trainees of the agency who participated in a Mnet survival show called Produce 101. They emerged in 2nd place and 9th place respectively and were included in a YMC Entertainment sponsored group, (Ideal of Idol). Facing no restrictions from their primary group (I.O.I) to engage in other activities, they were announced to be members of the girl group Jellyfish was putting together.

On June 7, Nayoung was announced as the 3rd member of the group. The group’s name was publicly revealed on June 17, 2016. Four days earlier, the agency revealed that the crew with be made of nine girls. The group debuted with an EP titled Little Mermaid on June 28, 2016.

Since then they have released a handful of singles, albums, and EPs. They have also promoted their music through tours in Japan.

2. It is Jellyfish Entertainment’s First Girl Group

Like their musical counterpart , Gugudan is the first of its kind in Jellyfish Entertainment. While VIXX was the first boy group emerging from the agency, Gugudan is the first girl group.

Jellyfish Entertainment is a South Korean entertainment agency established on August 17, 2007, by Hwang Se-jun. The agency is not as big as its counterparts and only offers four professional services; artist management, music production, publishing and licensing. They also manage a few artists and k-pop groups.

3. Who Are Gugudan Members?

Hana

Hana is the leader of the group as well as its main dancer, one of its rappers, vocalist, center and visual. She was born on April 30, 1993 as Shin Bo-ra. She is a citizen of Korea who attended Beombak High School and Seokyung University.

Mimi

Jung Mi-mi was born on January 1, 1993, in Korea. She attended Hyundai High School and Daeyoung High School. She is a former trainee at FNC Entertainment before she joined Jellyfish. She was announced as a Gugudan member on June 13, 2015, and is one of the group’s vocalist and visual.

Haebin

Main vocalist, Han Hae-bin was born on August 16, 1995. She was born in Busan, Korea. She has been a trainee with Jellyfish Entertainment since 2009.

Nayoung

Kim Na-young was born on November 23, 1995. She received formal education at Seoul Chongmok Elementary School, Shin Mok-Jung Middle School, Kyungbok Girls’ High School, and Baekseok Arts University. She was confirmed as a Gugudan member on June 9, 2016, after two years of training. She is the group’s lead vocalist and one of its rappers and vocalist.

Sejeong

Kim Se-jeong is a Korean singer born on August 28, 1995. She joined the group as one of its main vocalist and face of the group. She trained for just under two years (1 year and 11 months). She is the only member to have a solo career.

Sally

Liu Xie Ning is also known as Ryu Sa-jeo. She was born on October 23, 1996. She is a native of Guangdong, China. She schooled at Beijing Normal University and Beijing Contemporary Arts Academy. She is the group’s lead Dancer, lead rapper, and one of its vocalists.

Soyee

Jang So-jin was born in Gwangju, South Korea on November 21, 1996. She attended Seoul Chongmok Elementary School, Shin Mok-Jung Middle School, Kyungbok Girls’ High School, and Baekseok Arts University for her educational pursuits. Soyee was a Cube Entertainment and Plan A Entertainment trainee – jointly for 5 years before she joined Gugudan as its main vocalist.

Mina

Kang Mi-na is one of the group’s main rapper, main dancer, vocalist and maknae. She was born on December 4, 1999 in Jeju Island, South Korea. She went to Jeju Girls’ Middle School and  Seoul School of Performing Arts. She is also an actress.

Hyeyeon

Ex Gugudan member, Hyeyeon was born on August 5, 2000, in Korea. She attended Ansan Yangji Middle School and Seoul School of Performing Arts. Known as ‘a dancing machine’, she was the group’s lead dancer as well as one of its lead vocalist, rapper and maknae before she left.

4. Gugudan has its subunits

Despite being young, the group has been split into two groups or sub-units. The first group is called Gugudan 5959. It was made up of two the youngest members Mina and Hyeyeon. They released their debut single on August 10, 2017, titled Ice Chu. The group has since become defunct after Hyeyeon left the crew.

The second part of the group is known as Gugudan SeMiNa. It was created in June 2018 and consists of Sejeong, Mina and Nayoung. Its members released an EP consisting of 2 tracks on July 10, 2018.

5. Why Did Hyeyeon leave?

Hyeyeon who debuted as one of the group’s lead dancer, vocalist as well as rapper and maknea, unfortunately, left the group in October 2018. It was revealed that she had to leave due to health issues and to further her education. This information was disclosed by Jellyfish Entertainment.

6. Their Discography: Singles, EPs and Albums

Gugudan debuted on June 28, 2016, with the release of their debut EP Act. 1 The Little Mermaid. It contained 6 tracks with Wonderland as its title track. It made it to the 38th spot on the South Korean Gaon Digital Chart in 2016. In all, the group has released 4 EPs, 5 Singles, 3 soundtrack albums, and 2 single albums.

7. Net Worth

The Gugudan girl group has been around for over two years and since that time has recorded huge success in terms of fame, recognition, awards, and fortune. And even though several sites have stipulated their supposed net worth, they have not been verified.
