When was the last time a grade school pupil wowed you? Remember? The timing may not be as important as the event that brought about the fascination and the admiration that shone in your eyes for that young one. That was the case when Bella Ramsey, the breakout star of Game of Thrones season 6, playing the character of Lady Mormont.
The starlet was introduced in The Broken Man episode of the sixth season and stole the heart of fans with her spectacular portrayal. She wowed us with lines like “Bear Island knows no king but the king in the North whose name is Stark.” Who is she really? Find out from these facts.
6 Things You Need to Know About Bella Ramsey
She is Still in Her Teens
The young English actress was born in September 2003 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, in the United Kingdom. Bella’s father is a businessman and she has an older sibling, a sister. Not much is in the know about the young actress’ early life or what influenced her but it can be well assumed that she fell in love with the art of portraying others very early in her life and may be doing so for a very long time.
Bella Started Acting at the Age of 4
The firebrand actress started acting at just 4 years old and has starred in a number of amateur productions like playing Amaryllis in The Music Man and Molly in Annie, while she trained at Stagecoach Theatre Arts. After seven years in the school, Bella earned a place at The Television Workshop (a British organization that offers training for young people in performance skills for television, film, radio, and theatre) where her auditioning for professional jobs started.
It is noteworthy that when the professional job came, she made her debut in the series, Game of Thrones.
Her First Credited Role is the Young Noblewoman, Lyanna Mormont
Bella Ramsey was only 12 when she was picked to play the formidable leader of Bear Island, Lady Lyanna Mormont. The young leader slays her part; whether she was educating adult three to four times her age on the meaning of Northern loyalty or sending her army to help Sansa Stark and Jon Snow in the battle to retake Winterfell.
Nevertheless, after she made her debut appearance, it was left for fans and critics to say what an actress she is. Wondering what they said? You must have said the same or even more about her. They noted her as a standout actress for portraying her character’s no-nonsense leadership style. The observation was reprised till the season finale with even The Hollywood Reporter calling her “season 6’s breakout star”.
Bella Ramsey is a Huge Fan of her Character
Prior to her appearing on the show, Bella was only allowed to view snippets suitable for her age, but she got so immersed in her character that she would even wear her costume always and the result has had such a tremendous effect on us.
She said about Lyanna that she is strong about what she believes, and wants to keep her family and island protected; she wants to be treated like an adult. Bella also added that she is strong, and firm when she needs to be and wants the best for her house and the North. The starlet also realized the importance of her character to the whole story even though it took her a while to do so. The realization dawned on her one particular morning when she woke up with the thought that she is really integral to the storyline.
Bella knew it is no ordinary role or a child’s play and she really got her teeth into it.
She got many Nods from her Fellow Cast and Crews for her Performance
The show’s executive producer, Weiss described Bella’s performance as tough and terrifying considering the fact that a lot of dramatic weight was put on the shoulders of a very young person. He also noted that they are very lucky to find Bella who did a great job of talking smack to the guys (who are used to being the heroes) and making proclamations.
The co-executive producer, Bryan Cogman was also blown away by her portrayal. He described Bella as terrific adding that the whole cast and crew were very impressed.
Not only did she wow them with her epic performance, she also challenged them with her work ethics. She is always on set and usually reads through the whole scene first, not necessarily focusing on her lines, but on the scene as a whole. The idea is to have an understanding of the scene before she actually approaches her lines. And while her co-actors would be trying to remember their lines, she already has hers on her fingertips ready to voice them, with the right inflections too.
She has also Starred in other Works.
Following her appearance in Game of Thrones, she got the lead role as the titular character, Mildred Hubble in the 2017 remake of The Worst Witch. She will appear in the American action-mystery film Holmes and Watson, a comedic take on Sherlock.
The film is directed and written by Ethan Cohen and features an all-star cast including Will Ferrell, Rob Brydon, Kelly Macdonald, Rebecca Hall, Ralph Fiennes, and Hugh Laurie.
Bella Ramsey, who is represented by actor’s agency Conway van Gelder Grant did a voice over on Gizan in the 2017 film, Princess Emmy and will also voice Hilda in the Netflix series, Hilda. She portrayed Lorna Luft in the 2018 film Judy.
