The name Nixon brings to mind the disgraced 37th president of the United States but Cynthia Nixon the highly acclaimed actress is not related to this president, however, she has used the global stage that acting has given to her to lend her voice to political and social issues.
Cynthia Nixon is mostly remembered for her performance as Miranda Hobbes on the HBO series; Sex and the City (1998-2004), a role for which she received praise, global renown, and award nominations; some of which she won. Biography
Cynthia Ellen Nixon was born on the 9th of April in 1966 in Manhattan, New York City. Her parents were Walter Elmer Nixon Jr. who was a radio journalist and Anne Elizabeth, who worked as an actress. Her family fell apart when she was six years old as her parents were divorced. Nixon has English and German ancestry and she was the only child of her father and mother who both died in 1998 and 2013 respectively.
In 1984, she graduated from her high school; Hunter College High School and went to Barnard College to pursue a degree in English Literature and for a while in 1986, she moved abroad for some part of her education. Cynthia Nixon already started to act and appear on TV a child with her first appearance on TV being on a game show where her mother worked. In 1979 at the age of twelve, she had her first role as an actress in a play; The Seven Wishes of a Rich Kid. Her debut in movies was with the role of Sunshine Walker in the movie Little Darlings in 1980.
While she was in elementary, high school and university, she worked as an actress and the money she made helped put her through school. Some of the works which she appeared in during those periods include; Prince of the City, I am the Cheese and My Body, My Child.
Nixon’s acting was not restricted to just TV and movies as she has performed on Broadway. Her first Broadway performance was in 1980 with the role of Dinah Lord in The Philadelphia Story which was followed by other Broadway productions. Most notably is her having roles in two plays that were being performed at the same time.
By the time she bagged a role on the hit show Sex and the City, she had appeared in over twenty movies, TV shows and plays altogether. What playing Miranda Hobbes on the 1998 TV show did was to consolidate her fame and present her to a wider audience than she had managed previously. For her performance on the show, she got three nominations and one win from the Emmys.
