There are some franchises that fans cannot have enough of; Mission Impossible is one. The franchise which has 6 films in its gloves and even more to come, is among those that have recorded both critical and commercial successes, grossing a whopping $3.5 billion to this day.
It all started in 1996, following the lead story which was initially a TV series of the same title. It continued with the missions of the IMF’s crack team overseen by Ethan Hunt played by .
For those yet to see the movie and those who have seen one or part of the movie’s franchise, here is an opportunity to get to know the order and sequence in which the story behind the film is made.
The Order of Mission Impossible
1. Mission Impossible (1996)
This first movie in the brand was released in 1996, presenting a story that centers on Ethan Hunt and how he was set up and accused of killing his fellow IMF team members in a rather clumsy mission in the Czech Republic’s capital. And for also dealing with an arms dealer named Max which involves classified government secrets. Now on the run, he must seek the truth and uncover the plot and expose the real traitor so his name can be cleared.
2. Mission Impossible 2 (2000)
Mission Impossible 2 was released 4 years after the first movie. It served the lovers of the film with another intriguing story which focuses on how Ethan Hunt sends an international thief Nyah Nordoff Hall on a secret mission to foil a mission of a mischievous IMF agent and ex-lover of the international thief, Sean Ambrose played by Dougray Scott. Dougray plans to steal a lethal virus to start an outbreak and in turn offer its antidote for sale to the highest bidder.
3. Mission Impossible lll (2006)
In need of more action and to follow the story behind the original mission impossible TV series, the producers made another one 6 years after the second movie, so a third sequel was released in 2006. The story this time revolves around Ethan Hunt’s retirement as leader of the IMF team, his engagement, and plans for marriage. As usual, he brings a team together to go after the cunning arms and information broker Owen Davian played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, who plans to sell a strange deadly piece of object called “the rabbit’s foot.”
4. Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)
The producers of the Mission Impossible movie franchise continue to dish out a more captivating, exciting and intriguing story as Ghost Protocol, the fourth installment was released in 2011, 5 years after the release of the third action piece. In ghost protocol, Ethan Hunt and his entire IMF team are blamed for a bomb attack at the Kremlin while on an investigation of a man known as Cobalt (Michael Nyqvist). Now Ethan and three other agents must find a way and foil his plans to start a global nuclear war.
5. Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)
Here is another big one from the franchise, Rogue Nation which was released in 2015. The story continued as Ethan Hunt is facing a serious threat from a group known as the Syndicate. Too bad, Ethan and his team were disbanded, but he rallies them again, and their mission’s priority is to prove that indeed the Syndicate exist and bring them down by all means possible.
6. Mission Impossible – Fallout (2018)
For now, this is the 6th and last of the installment of the MI films, released in 2018 and titled Fallout. This is one movie you wouldn’t want to miss as it focuses on an IMF mission to retrieve plutonium which goes terribly bad, and the world is in a dicey situation; an impending strike from the Apostles, a deadly terrorist organization founded by former members of the Syndicate. In his usual defiance nature, Ethan makes it a point of duty to complete the mission, but the CIA doubts his loyalty and motives.
How To Watch In Sequence
For lovers of the MI films, more is coming as an announcement was made in January 2019 that both the 7th and 8th installments of MI is underway. It was further revealed that both films will be shot simultaneously and released in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
To enjoy and have a better understanding of the MI movie franchise, it would be a sweet experience to get the first taste of the story. Because of this, the best way that one should watch the movies is based on how they were released.
