Left with little option, the filmmakers reached out to Netflix which was more than happy to provide the needed funding for the film.

According to Scorsese, with the movie business ever-changing, most places that provided funding in the past were no longer viable and because he still wanted to make a great movie, they reached out to Netflix which bought the idea more than any other traditional studio.

Consequent to this agreement between Netflix and the filmmakers, The Irishman will be made available for streaming on Netflix from November 27, 2019.

Will The Movie Be Released In Cinemas Too?

The Irishman will first appear in cinemas before it will be made available on Netflix. The initial release date of the film is September 27, 2019. However, viewers in the United States will have to wait until November 1, 2019, before they can finally see the over 3-hour long film.

That said, De Niro revealed that instead of the usual release, The Irishman will come on a limited release on the big screen. It will only be made available in some selected venues.

Although Netflix initially wanted its films to be released in cinemas and for streaming simultaneously, it has backed down on it and now gives a few weeks for some of its big works to first be in the theatres before finally making it on its streaming platform. It is thanks to this that The Irishman is making a release on both cinemas and afterward, on the streaming platform.

Even as Netflix is taking the competition right to the doorstep of Hollywood, it is quite fair for traditional movie lovers to have it on the big screen before it finally goes for streaming.
