From Baltimore Ravens to San Francisco 49ers, the Philadelphia Eagles and now with the Carolina Panthers, Torrey Smith has earned a good reputation for being a phenomenal wide receiver. More to that, the two-time Super Bowl champion is massively admired for his virtuous character.
Born in Colonial Beach, Virginia on the 26th of January and in the year 1989, James Torrey Smith had a rough time growing up. He was raised by a single mom and the hardship of his upbringing ultimately shaped the well-respected man he has become. He was a student of Stafford High School in Falmouth, Virginia where he proved to be athletically inclined; thriving in basketball, Torrey prioritized football and received several prestigious honors before he moved on to the University of Maryland.
Majoring in criminology and criminal justice at Maryland, he ended his collegiate career with 19 touchdowns, 152 receptions, and 2,215 receiving yards. This brought him coveted recognitions including his naming as a First-Team All-ACC in 2009 and 2010. The 2011 NFL Draft saw Smith join the Baltimore Ravens, he was the 58th overall pick and was drafted in the second round. He blazed for the Ravens from 2011 to 2014, spent his 2015 and 2016 NFL seasons with the 49ers, played for the Eagles in 2017 and joined the Panthers in 2018.
Torrey Smith’s Brother, Wife, and Family
22nd September 2012 was a very sad day for Torrey as he lost his younger brother Tevin Chris Jones in a motorcycle accident. Tevin fondly called Lil Chris reportedly ran off the road, bashed a utility pole and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Wide receiver insisted to play the Baltimore Ravens’ next game which came in less than 24 hours after Lil Chris’ death. After a moment of silence was observed for Tevin with his pictures displayed on screens, Torrey led the Ravens to a 31-30 win against the New England Patriots. He scored two touchdowns, caught six passes for 127 yards and dedicated it to Lil Chris.
Tevin isn’t Torrey’s only sibling; he has Integra Jenkins and Illegra Smith as sisters and another brother named Troy Smith. In all, the footballer is the oldest of his single mom’s seven children. It is that he helped his mom Monica Chante Jenkins raise his siblings, while the woman worked two jobs to provide for the family, Torrey would babysit and care for his younger ones.
Clarence Rhodes, the wide receiver’s biological father was a military man. His affair with 15-year-old Monica was what led to Torrey’s birth. As Monica was still a minor and wanted to protect the military man from a statutory rape charge, she didn’t disclose who Torrey’s dad was until six years later.
As far as we can tell, Torrey Smith has been a fine husband to Chanel Williams, the woman he married in July 2013. As the story goes, the two met at the University of Maryland and were both athletes with Chanel running track, it was easier for them to develop mutual admiration and understanding. Eventually, they became lovers and dated for a good number of years before they became life partners.
The couple welcomed their first child, a son on April 4, 2014, and named him Torrey Jeremiah Smith. Sometime in June 2016, they announced the arrival of their second son Kameron James. The wide receiver once detailed that he and Chanel were disturbed when they learned that Kameron may be birthed with the Edwards Syndrome. Thankfully, the baby arrived without the syndrome and is currently super-healthy. In July 2018, the NFL star disclosed via Twitter that his family is awaiting the arrival of its first daughter.
Owing to the challenges Torrey and Chanel faced while growing up, they have been involved in many charity endeavors. Notable amongst them is the Torrey Smith Family Fund, an organization established to help youths attain their full potential.
