Growing up must have been rosy for Hilary and her siblings as her father was the owner of a chain of convenience stores. For the most part, Hilary was homeschooled which may be as a result of her interest in the arts at a very early age. Her mother was a pillar of support and encouraged Hilary and her older sister Haylie to start attending acting, singing as well as dance classes where they learned ballet. Consequently, the Duff sisters decided to build their career in the performing arts and they, alongside their mother, relocated to California to actualize this dream in 1993.

In California, they took jobs in television commercials and also did a bit of modeling for a few clothing brands.
