CNBLUE is probably the only mainstream South Korean music group to have gone through an unorthodox route that saw them leaving the country before returning to achieve success. In its early days, the CNBLUE’s members had to spend some time performing on the streets of Japan before later returning home where they put out chart-topping music that ensured they were on the right path to greatness. Here is a look at the band’s members as well as a few other facts about them.
Full Profile of CNBLUE Members
1. Jung Yong-Hwa
Musician, singer-songwriter, record producer and actor, Jung Yong-Hwa serves as the leader of CNBLUE. He is also the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the band.
The Seoul native was born on the 22nd of June, 1989. He spent a huge chunk of his childhood in Busan, South Korea’s second-most populous city before moving back to Seoul after completing his college entrance. By this time, he had made up his mind to pursue his interests in music and thus formed a band. He and his band would go on to spend time in Japan where they would continue to hone their craft before releasing their debut EP Now or Never in August 2009, and the rest became history.
On the acting front, Jung made his debut in 2009 in the SBS drama You’re Beautiful. He has since gone ahead to appear in other series like MBC’s Heartstrings in 2011, KBS2’s Marry Him If You Dare in 2013, and JTBC’s The Package in 2017 among others.
2. Kang Min-hyuk
Kang Min-hyuk is the drummer of CNBLUE. The musician, who was born on the 28th of June, 1991 in Ilsan-gu, Goyang, South Korea, became a member of the band in 2009 just before they debuted in Japan under the indie label AL Entertainment.
In 2010, the group returned to Korea and released the mini-album Bluetory, whose title track “I’m a Loner” became an instant hit. This proved to be a good launching board for Kang as he began taking acting roles soon after. His first role was in an Omnibus film Acoustic (2010) after which he appeared in the SBS drama series It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl (2010). The following year, he appeared alongside bandmate Jung Yong-hwa in Heartstrings and contributed to an Original Sound Track for the drama titled “Star”.
Kang won his first award in 2012 for his performance in KBS2’s My Husband Got a Family. He took home the Rising Star Award at the 1st K-Drama Star Awards. Other appearances he has made include the MBC medical drama Hospital Ship in 2017 and the period comedy film, The Princess and the Matchmaker (2018).
3. Lee Jung-shin
Lee Jung-shin, the tallest member of the band who stands at a height of 188 cm, serves as the bassist of CNBLUE. He also contributes as a rapper and backup vocalist. Like his bandmates, the South Korean is also an actor who has appeared in a number of projects.
Born on the 15th of September, 1991, the Seoul native spent the whole of his early life in Ilsan. He attended Jung Bal High School before joining FNC Entertainment in 2009; the same year, he would join CNBLUE as a bassist and help them set the record for achieving number one on South Korea’s music programs in the shortest time since debut.
With all the hype created around CNBLUE and with each member going on to get involved in order projects, it is not surprising that Lee made his acting debut in 2012 in KBS2’s family drama Seoyoung, My Daughter. His performance on the show garnered him rave reviews as well as numerous best new actor award nominations. Other series and films which he would go-ahead to appear in include The Blade and Petal (2013), Temptation (2014), KBS2’s drama special Thank You, My Son, tvN’s romantic comedy Cinderella with Four Knights alongside actors Jung Il-woo and Park So-dam, and the historical romance drama TV series, My Sassy Girl (2017) among others.
