Every other day there appears to be another pop group being formed in South Korea. Most times, these groups do not end up seeing the light of day or they end up getting disbanded before they are able to put out a notable project. Weki Meki is one of the newly created girl groups in the country but unlike others, they appear to be on the right track to greatness, having already released EPs that achieved a top 10 position on the country’s music chart.
7 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Weki Meki Girl Group
1. Weki Meki Consists Of Eight Members
Weki Meki comprises of a total of eight members: Lucy, Ji Su-yeon, Sei, Lua, Choi Yoo-jung, Kim Do-yeon, Elly, and Rina who are all or either singers, rappers, songwriters, and dancers. The group was put together in 2017 by the South Korean entertainment company Fantagio, which manages a number of other actors, actresses, and recording acts.
2. The Produce 101 Reality Show Produced Four Of Its Members
The Mnet survival television program Produce 101 is responsible for having discovered about half of the total members of Weki Meki. Members – Sei, Choi Yoo-jung, Kim Do-yeon, and Elly all participated in the program that has given birth to the careers of many singers, rappers, and dancers in China, South Korea, and Japan.
While Sei and Elly were unable to make the final top 11 contestants, Choi Yoo-jung and Kim Do-yeon made the cut and thus debuted in the project’s girl group, I.O.I. The pair, however, left the group in 2017 when it officially disbanded.
3. They Have Appeared In A Reality Show Together
In 2018, all the members of Weki Meki, particularly Lucy, Rina, and Lua, appeared in the reality show Weki Meki, What’s Up? which was aired on the Mohae channel. The reality show, which was 15 minutes per episode, premiered on the 1st of February 2018 on NAVER tvcast. It ended after the 60th episode aired on the 1st of April 2018.
4. Some Members Of The Group Are Actresses
While not much is known about some members of the girl group in regards to their other endeavors, a few others are known to have flourishing careers as actresses. Members Choi Yoo-jung and Kim Do-yeon, who gained fame from appearing in Produce 101, have repeatedly appeared in front of the camera in a number of South Korean TV series.
Yoo-jung has appeared in a number of reality shows; she was notably part of the main cast of Idol Fever (2017). Do-yeon, on the other hand, played the main role in To Be Continued (2015) and has appeared in others like Short (2018), Law of the Jungle in Last Indian Ocean (2018), and Be Melodramatic (2019).
5. Weki Meki Members Have Appeared In Other K-Pop Stars Music Videos
By 2019, Weki Meki released six music videos for their songs: “I Don’t Like Your Girlfriend”, “Butterfly”, “La La La”, “Crush”, “Picky Picky”, and “Tika Taka (99%)”. In addition to appearing in them, members of the group have also appeared in music videos of other K-Pop artists. Sei was in ASTRO’s “Confession,” while Yoo-jung was in ASTRO’s “Breathless”. Do-yeon, on the other hand, has appeared in San E & Raina’s “Sugar and Me” music video.
6. Their First Project Peaked At Number 7 On The Gaon Music Chart
The group’s debut body of work was an EP titled Weme which was released on the 8th of August, 2017. Its lead track was titled “I Don’t Like Your Girlfriend” and it contained a total of six songs. Weme went on to peak at number 7 on South Korea’s Gaon Album Chart and sold over 47,000 physical copies, thus making it the highest-selling album by a girl group that debuted in that year.
The following year, Weki Meki released another EP titled Lucky which performed better than their previous effort on the chart. It peaked at number 2 but only managed to sell 31,609 physical copies.
7. The Group Have Won a Number of Awards
Since breaking into the scene, Weki Meki has received a number of awards. In 2017, they received three nominations without winning an award. The following year, however, they bagged the Most Anticipated Rising Star Award at the Brand Awards as well as the K-POP Singer Award at the Korean Culture Entertainment Awards among several other nominations. In 2019, the group took home the Art-trainer Award at the Soribada Best K-Music Awards.
