What’s more, the Wolverine actors so far have done justice to the mutant who has extraordinary abilities.
has portrayed the iconic character for quite a long time and we can’t imagine any other person in the role, but has it always been him and who is the possible candidate to replace him when he finally takes a bow?
Wolverine’s Background Information
The character was created by Roy Thomas (Marvel editor-in-chief), Len Wein (writer) and John Romita Sr. (art director). However, the first Wolverine costume was the brainchild of Romita. The character’s background details show his birthplace was Nothern Alberta in Canada where he was born in the late 1880s. His birth name is James Howlett but overtime, he adopted several nicknames, including Logan, Wolverine, Death and a lot more.
Asides his menacing retractable claws, Wolverine possesses other abilities, including superhuman senses which are heightened by animal-like attributes, extended longevity as he regenerates when injured, retractable bone claws, as well as mind-blowing martial arts skills. In a nutshell, he is a mutant with powers beyond imagination and is often associated with the X-Men, Alpha Flight, and The Avengers. This is why only the most talented actors are sought after for the role of Wolverine.
Wolverine was first depicted in The Incredible Hulk #180 in October 1974, in a cameo appearance before picking up a more prominent role in The Incredible Hulk #181 the same year. So far, Wolverine has made appearances in most of the X-Men projects – animated TV series, video games and the X-Men film series to rave reviews.
Actors Who Already Played The Wolverine
Although the role of Wolverine has mostly been linked to Hugh Jackman, he is not the only actor who has brought the character to life. Howbeit, he remains the star with the most Wolverine appearances. He played the role in nine X-Men film series between 2000 and 2017. His first appearance as Wolverine marked a new phase in his career that put him out there for the world to love and respect. His portrayal of the role earned him the Guinness World Record for the longest career as a live-action Marvel superhero.
Troye Sivan played a younger version of the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). Some of the other actors who have been linked to the Wolverine role in animated projects and video games include Mark Hamill, Steve Blum, Cathal J. Dodd, Scott McNeil, Rikiya Koyama, Craig Bierko, Richard Tillman, and Patrick Pinney.
Who Will Play The Next Wolverine?
After seventeen years on the role, it is only natural that Hugh Jackman hands over the baton to a younger actor and that’s about to happen. The rumor mill has been buzzing with speculations on who might be deemed fit to depict the iconic X-Men member and many names have popped up in the process, although the right authorities have not given out any clue on who they are considering for the job.
Nevertheless, the selection process for the new wolverine actor is expected to swing in different directions. There is a chance that the production company would spice things up by going for a female Wolverine, a move that might bring to the fore. Another possibility is that an entirely unknown star would be given the role (just like in the time of Jackman) and thus, introduce him to the mainstream or, on the other hand, an already established actor would just step in to save the day. Either way, Hugh Jackman has left some really big shoes to fill and whoever gets the role has their work cut out for them and would have to pull all the stops to rise above the record he set.
Among those rumored to get the opportunity to wield Wolverine’s adamantium retractable claws are – , , , , , Christopher Abbott, , Taron Egerton and a lot more. Interestingly, retiring from the role does not mean Jackman won’t make occasional appearances as an older Wolverine.
