Ace of Angels popularly known as AOA currently consists of five members – Jimin, Yuna, Hyejeong, Seolhyun, and Chanmi. They debuted in 2012 and soon became a global sensation, thanks to their addictive melodies, visually stunning choreography, and the exceptional beauty of their members.
AOA was originally an eight-member South Korean K-Pop girl group formed in 2012 by FNC Entertainment. One thing led to another and Youkyung left in October 2016. She was joined less than a year later by Choa, in June 2017 and then Mina, in May 2019 after the latter decided not to renew her contract with FNC Entertainment, opting for a solo career instead.
Following Mina’s departure, there came up rumors that the group was disbanding. However, the rumor was soon debunked. and although it is not what it used to be, there’s a lot of prospects for the current brood.
7 Interesting Things To Know About The Current AOA Group Members
1. They All Come From an All Girl Family
None of the current AOA members, Jimin, Hyejeong, Seolhyun, Yuna, and Chanmi has a brother. Jimin, the group leader as well as Seolhyun have an older sister each while Chanmi and Yuna both have younger sister each. Hyejeong, on the other hand, is an only child.
2. The AOA Current Members are All Good Dancers
The group started by promoting themselves both as a band (AOA Black made up of 5 out of 8 members) and a dance group (AOA White).
AOA Black was made up of Jimin, Yuna, Choa, Mina, Youkyung while the dance team comprise Hyejeong, Chanmi and Seolhyun, all of which are in the current group. There is another sub-unit in the group known as AOA Cream made up of Yuna, Hyejeong and Chanmi.
3. Every one of them Holds a Vital Position in the Group
Jimin, besides being the leader of the group is the main rapper and also plays guitar. She has been interested in music since a young age and as such learned guitar, harmonica, and piano.
Seolhyun played piano since childhood and has always wanted to be a dancer. She learned to dance while in a school club. She is the group’s lead dancer, visuals and vocalist.
Hyejeong used to be a very shy kid and thus never considered a career in entertainment. However, after learning to cheerlead in high school and being a promotional model, her confidence was boosted and she decided to go into entertainment. She is a vocalist and also AOA’s visuals.
The Maknae (the youngest member of the group), Chanmi has been dancing since she was a child. Her mother sent her to a dancing school very early which helped to shape her idol future. She is the main dancer of the group. She also raps and contributes vocals.
Yuna is often introduced as a glamorous angel because of her ideal body but has shown that she is worth more than her body. She has a beautiful voice and does wonders on the piano which she has been playing since she was 7. Yuna started to train as a singer when she moved to Seoul at 18. She is the lead vocalist and keyboardist.
4. This is How They Joined AOA
Every success story has a beginning and these angels definitely have theirs.
Starting with Jimin, though it is unknown how she came to be a member of the group, she made her debut in July 2012 on Mnet’s M! Countdown with Elvis from their debut single album, Angels’ Story.
Seolhyun on the other hand got to meet their current manager, subsequently joining the group when she participated in Smart Uniform Model contest.
For Hyejeong, she took part in a supermodel pageant where she made it to the third preliminary round. While she did not win the contest, she got to be discovered by FNC Entertainment’s casting director. She joined the company in August 2010 as a trainee.
Chanmi did not have to take part in any contest to be discovered. Her dancing skills were evident even in a game of basketball. The AOA maknae was scouted in the 2nd year of middle school while she was dancing during a basketball game. Finally, Yuna, just like Jimin debuted as an AOA member on Mnet’s M! Countdown.
5. AOA Members are Amazing Actresses
As beautiful as they are talented, these AOA members have proven that they are more than beautiful voices and smart dance moves. They are incredible actresses as well.
Seolhyun has starred in TV dramas like Seo-Young, My Daughter (2012), Ugly Alert (2013) and Orange Marmalade (2015). Yuna was cast in the lead role in the Japanese musical Summer Snow (2013). She has also appeared in a few dramas such as Hot and Sweet (2016), Single Wife (2017) and the 2016 web drama My Old Friend.
Heyjoung acted in a 2013 episode of SBS’s drama Cheongdam-dong Alice. Chanmi starred in the web drama, What’s Up With These Kids? while Jimin appeared in the drama Click Your Heart both in 2016.
6. Jimin is a Rap Goddess
Jimin is a gifted and insanely talented rapper that she even raps in her sleep. In 2015, she was a semi-finalist on the first season of Unpretty Rapstar, where she showed off her rapping ability. She finished in fourth place. Jimin wrote the rap for the AOA single MOYA.
