Born December 22, 1970, as Rafael Edward, Ted Cruz started off as a junior United States Senator from Texas and ended up as a Republican candidate for President of the United States in the 2016 election.

Educational Background

Cruz attended two private high schools – Faith West Academy and Second Baptist High School (bot in Texas) from which he graduated as valedictorian in 1988.

He has a B.A in public Policy from Princeton University. While at Princeton University, he began to showcase his interest in governance and skills in public speaking. He competed for the American Whig-Cliosophic Society’s Debate Panel and emerged winner of the top speaker award at both the 1992 U.S. National Debating Championship and the 1992 North American Debating Championship.

The same year, Cruz, alongside his debate partner David Panton was named U.S. National Speaker of the Year. They also got the title – Team of the Year by the American Parliamentary Debate Association.

After his bachelor at Princeton University, Cruz headed to Havard University where he bagged the Juris Doctor degree. At Havard, he served as the editor of the Harvard Law Review, an executive editor of the Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, he was also a founding editor of the Harvard Latino Law Review.

Career

After graduating from Havard, Cruz worked briefly as an attorney before joining the U.S league of politicians. Cruz was successful as an attorney, winning many high profile cases. He began his political career by first taking up a job on George W. Bush’s Presidential Campaign team in 2000 as an adviser. After serving in Bush’s Campaign team in 2003, Cruz was appointed to work at the office of Solicitor General of Texas by the Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott – he remained in that position till 2008. Following his time at the office of Solicitor General of Texas, he returned to private practice working with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP.

His stay at the private firm was also a huge timeout. There, he successfully led the firm’s U.S. Supreme Court and national appellate litigation practice. Cruz also handled two record-breaking $54 million personal injury awards in New Mexico at the appellate level.

He has personally sponsored 25 bills of his own – including the S.177, a bill to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the health-care related provisions of the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010.

In 2012, Cruz announced his intention to run as a U.S senator. He got support from the likes of Sarah, Rand Paul, and the Tea Party – they all stood behind him and gave him all the support he needed and in 2012, he emerged a winner.

In January 2013, he assumed office as the U.S senator representing Texas. As a U.S Senator, Ted Cruz has also served in several committees including the Joint Economic Committee; the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; the Committee on Rules and Administration; the Committee on the Judiciary and the Committee on Armed Services.

In 2015, he announced that he was running for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination and chose Carly Fiorina as his running mate. Cruz officially announced his decision to suspend his campaign after losing to Trump in the Indiana primaries.

Ted’s father is a Cuban American and his mother is three-quarters Irish and one-quarter Italian. His mother -Eleanor Elizabeth was born in Wilmington, Delaware and earned a degree in mathematics from Rice University.

His father, Rafael Bienvenido Cruz was born in Cuba but left Cuba to the U.S in 1957 to school. While in the U.S, he attended the University of Texas and obtained political asylum after his four-year student visa expired. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2005.

He also has a Canadian citizenship. At the time of Ted’s birth, his parents had stayed in Calgary for three years where they owned a seismic-data processing firm for oil drilling.

Cruz is happily married to Heidi Nelson who he met while working as an adviser on George Bush’s Presidential Campaign team. The two tied the knots in May 2001 and are blessed with two daughters – Caroline and Catherine.

Cruz political career was threatened when an article appeared on National Enquirer alleging the Texas Senator had been flirting with five different women.

The article included pixelated photos of the women allegedly involved with the senator but without mentioning their names. The Senator, of course, denied the allegations and accused of being behind the tabloid report aimed at tarnishing his image.

Trump denied any connection to the report.
