South Korean singer G Dragon has made a reputation for himself as one of the most famous Asian celebrities over the last decade. He is a singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer, fashion designer, and entrepreneur. The singer is best known for being a member of a South Korean hip hop band called Big Bang. It definitely would not be surprising to know that G Dragon is not the birth name of the singer, as it is only a stage name coined from his surname Ji-Yong. The letter “G” from G-Dragon is adapted from the English pronunciation of “Ji” the first syllable of his surname Ji-Yong, while “Dragon” is the English translation of “Yong”.
G Dragon was born as Kwon Ji-Yong on August 18, 1988, in Seoul, the capital city of South Korea. The singer was born to his parents Han Gi-ran and Kwon Young Hwan. Growing up, he attended Seoul Korean Traditional Arts Middle and High School. After he completed his high school education, he went on to study postmodern music at the Kyung University but dropped out along the way. He later enrolled at Gukje Cyber University and obtained his bachelor’s degree in 2013. He got his master’s degree in content and retail distribution from Sejong University.
When he was 6 years old, he started doing music and joined a young music group called Little Roo’ra. The group soon split up after its contract with its recording company was terminated, just after they released a Christmas album. Two years later, he got scouted by Korea’s biggest entertainment company, SM Entertainment. At SM Entertainment, G Dragon worked as a trainee until he was 13 years old and specialized more in dancing than singing. He left the label after 5 years of working as a trainee.
He later signed up with a South Korean record label called YG Entertainment. There, he started working as a trainee, he would clean the studio for other artists and also carry their water bottles during dance practice. Both G Dragon and another trainee at YG Entertainment named Dong Young-bae had plans of forming a musical duo but YG Entertainment scrapped their plans of a duo and instead replaced it for a boy band. Auditions were held so as to get other band members for the group and four new guys were introduced to the band, Jang Hyun-Seung, Seungri, Daesung, and Choi. Dong Young-bae later changed his stage name to Taeyang and Choi also changed his to T.O.P.
The group was officially unveiled on television but just before its first performance, Jang Hyun-Seung was dropped from the band, leaving the band with five members. They later renamed themselves the Big Bang. Since then, the group has gone on to be very successful and is known to be one of the most-loved and influential band in South Korea. Also, G Dragon’s solo career is just as successful as his group career, earning himself multiple awards both home and abroad.
While it is already known that at least one year of compulsory military service awaits every South Korean male citizen between the age of 18 and 35, G Dragon is also not an exception to this. The music star is currently observing his military duties as a regular soldier; he started on February 27, 2018, and is scheduled to complete his service on October 26, 2019.
